Dismissal and Readmission
Dismissal
Probation and dismissal should not be regarded as punishments. Rather they are warning signals to keep you from a serious waste of money and from creating a record that is very difficult to dig your way out of. Remember that a provision exists for bankrupting a semester so that after a period of time in good standing you can have your GPA calculated without the grades from a limited number of bad semesters. Please consult the Academic Services Handbook for the most current procedure.
Number of credit hours* and number of semesters** completed |
GPA*** Suspension Trigger |
Having completed 1-18 hours* in more than 1 |
Below 1.00 cumulatively. |
19-45 hours* |
There are two triggers here, either one is sufficient to invoke dismissal: Trigger 1. Both parts (A and B) of this condition are necesary: A. Presents a GPA below 1.75, both for the current semester and cumulative and, OR Trigger 2. A student will be dismissed who has a record showing less than a 2.0 at the end of a third consecutive semester. This rule holds irrespective of the cumulative GPA. |
46 hours and above* |
Trigger 1. Both parts (A and B) of this condition are necessary: A. presents a GPA below 2.00, both for the current semester and cumulatively and, OR Trigger 2. A student will be dismissed who has a record showing less than a 2.0 at the end of a third consecutive semester. This rule holds irrespective of the cumulative GPA. |
Calculations in the first column include all hours of college level work presented on a transcript. These include hours for another college, irrespective of whether the student received a passing grade for those hours. They also include all UNL or University hours for which a student enrolled and did not drop within the "Drop/Add" period--including P/N hours, I (Incomplete), W and NR. This column simply provides information as to how much college experience a student has when a question of dismissal arises.
Including transfer hours from outside NU in the number of hours considered in the first column does not mean that the grade points for all transfer hours will be included in the dismissal calculation in the second column. For this purpose only grades earned in the Nebraska University System (UNL, UNO, UNMC, UNK) are entered into the calculation.
** Attendance at any or all summer sessions in a given year will be counted as one semester's work. This makes for complicated calculations. If you are planning to attend summer school to get off probation, always consult an advisor first.
*** The first semester for which one is placed on probation is counted as the first of the sequence of 3. That is, if one earns grades for three semesters that warrant probation, one cannot enroll in a fourth semester. Alternatively put, one who has been placed on probation has only two additional semesters in which to rectify the problem before they will be suspended.
Readmission
After dismissal, one cannot return to classes until after the second semester of layout is completed. Readmission is not granted automatically. You can apply for readmission by the deadline listed in the Schedule of Classes for the semester in which you want to be re-enrolled. You will be asked to show evidence (either acadmeic or life experience) that demonstrates enhanced academic maturity.
Resist the impulse to regard probation and dismissal as punishments. Look upon them as warning signals to keep you from a serious waste of time and money; they forstall the creation of a record that you will find very difficult to dig your way out of.
