Guidelines and Timeline for Essential Studies (ES) Proposals
The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies (OUS) will be compiling a master list of essential studies courses for the 2008-09 Undergraduate Bulletin in the fall of 2007. To assure publication of the Essential Studies courses in the 2008-09 Undergraduate Bulletin, we must adhere to the following schedule.
Early August - OUS contacts each college to obtain a list of approved essential studies courses that have been adopted by their college from January 1, 2007 to present date. This form will be used by the college to supply the course number, title and essential studies area of each college's approved essential studies courses. The completed form should be emailed to Gail Hackwith (ghackwith2@unl.edu) no later than October 31.
Mid-November - OUS will consolidate all approved essential studies courses into the master ES list and redistribute to all colleges. At that time, each college will be given the opportunity to 1) consider adoption of essential studies from the other undergraduate colleges and 2) review/update established ES courses. Each college will email their adopted and updated essential studies courses to Gail Hackwith (ghackwith2@unl.edu) no later than December 4.
Early December - The Master List will be distributed to the colleges for final approval. This will be the last opportunity for revisions before the Essential Studies list is submitted for inclusion into the 2008-09 Undergraduate Bulletin. Colleges will email their final revisions to Gail Hackwith (ghackwith2@unl.edu) by January 8.
NOTE: In fall 1999, a process was developed to maintain consistency between the Essential Studies Master List contained in the Undergraduate Bulletin and Essential Studies course listings maintained by the colleges. Under this process, Essential Studies is updated in January of each year to coincide with the new list developed for the next Academic Year's Undergraduate Bulletin.
This process is necessary so the Essential Studies list shown in the General Information section of the Undergraduate Bulletin and the Essential Studies lists shown within the college sections of the Undergraduate Bulletin remain consistent. These lists are used for the degree audit. Having created consistency, the college list and the master list in the Undergraduate Bulletin should agree and should not be changed until fall of the following year. At that point we will, once again, start the process to correlate the Essential Studies Master List with each college list for the Undergraduate Bulletin.
