Math Readiness

To register for 100-level math courses (advanced algebra, pre-calculus, trigonometry, calculus) students must establish that they are ready to take the target course. Students establish their readiness by

  1. Documenting that they have taken the appropriate prerequisite courses either in high school or in college
    AND
  2. Scoring into the target course on the Math Placement Exam (MPE).

If your student did not register for the course they wanted to on their New Student Enrollment (NSE) day because they did not achieve the score they needed on the MPE, they may retake the test. In some cases students were allowed ("permitted") to register for a course at NSE for which they did not qualify on the MPE with the understanding that they would retake the test and gain a qualifying score prior to the semester beginning. Students who were "permitted" into a 100-level math course must qualify for the course via the MPE BY FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2009. The math department will drop students from math courses for which they are not qualified on August 21.

Check the math website for test times, location and practice exam. (http://www.math.unl.edu/resources/undergraduate/mpe/)

Parent Tip: To retake the MPE students need a photo ID and calculator. They do not need to register to take the exam. Students should do parts 1, 2 and 3 if they have not had trigonometry. The trick to the test is....students should NOT guess! Students should leave answers blank if they are unsure of the answer. We recommend students take the practice exam.

Adviser Assignments

Students can see who his or her adviser is in WAM. If they do not have one listed, they can contact their College advising center.

Parent Tip: Encourage your student to see an adviser frequently. The better we get to know your student the more assistance we can provide. Advisers can be a great resource for any question your student might have.

Classes Begin

Fall 2009 classes begin Monday August 24, 2009.
Parent Tip: Students move into the residence halls on Thursday, August 20, 2009 and thereafter.

Academic Calendar

Okay parents! The UNL ACADEMIC CALENDAR is the "thing" you should put on the refrigerator door. Print it and look at it weekly as the calendar lists all the important dates your student will be receiving information from us about during their first year of college. Students access this schedule every semester in the paper version of the "Schedule of Classes". We are not convinced they look at it, but you should to help them keep on track with important academic dates!

Student Development

Common issues students face the summer prior to college...

  • I am excited and nervous about meeting new friends.
  • I want to separate from my parents, but I still need their help.
  • How will I keep my friendships from high school intact?
  • What will dorm life be like or what will it be like to live at home and commute to campus?

How the parent/guardian can assist...

  • Help your student know change is exciting but also a little scary.
  • Show confidence in you student's choices so they doubt themselves less.
  • Do not overact to mood changes.
  • Be aware of your own emotional ups and downs.
  • Talk to your student about your expectations for their behavior while at school.
  • If your student is living on campus, develop a packing check list. Also make sure your home owners or renters insurance policy covers your student's living space on campus as well.
