AUGUST 17

Drop and Add

Students may add and drop full-semester courses free of tuition charges prior to and through the first week of classes. If a course has seats available on the on-line Schedule of Classes (http://unlsched.unl.edu/nusched/index.jsp) students may register themselves for the course without prior permission from the instructor. If the course has no seats available, the student should talk to the instructor to obtain an "override" or written permission to be in a closed course. Instructors have these forms. To obtain an override the student should go to the class and talk to the instructor. Once the instructor signs the form the student must submit it to Canfield 17 (Registration and Records) to add the course to their schedule.

Parent Tip: Students often fail to recognize that registration is a process rather than a one-time event. Students are adding and dropping courses constantly, so the availability of seats is in constant flux. Encourage your student to be patient and diligent in checking the Schedule of Classes for open seats. The process of adding and dropping courses becomes more complicated after the first week of classes, so encourage them to solidify their schedule during the first week of the semester.

Full-Time Student Status

A twelve semester credit load is considered full-time status. This is the minimum number of hours students must be registered for to be considered for full-time financial aid, scholarships, and to be covered by most health insurance policies.

Tuition Refund Schedule

Students may drop courses free of charge during the first week of the semester. After the first week students are assessed a tuition charge based upon WHEN they drop the course. Note: Mini-courses (courses that do not meet the entire semester) have a different tuition refund schedule than full-semester courses.

  • Last day to drop a full-semester course and receive 100% tuition refund: Monday, August 31, 2009
  • Last day to drop a full-semester course and receive 75% tuition refund: Friday, September 4, 2009
  • Last day drop a full-semester course and receive 50% tuition refund: Friday, September 11, 2009
  • Last day drop a full semester course and receive 25% tuition refund: Friday, September 18, 2009
  • After Friday, September 18, 2009 students do not receive any refund for dropped courses.

Parent Tip: Students usually "know" within the first couple of days of class whether or not a course is one they want to keep on their schedule. Communicate to your student that for most Achievement Centered Education requirements, UNL offers MANY choices. If they do not care for the course for which they are currently registered, the chances are good that another course will meet the same requirement. Encourage your student to make personal choices about their general education requirements in the FIRST WEEK of each semester to avoid tuition charges for drops after the stated refund deadline.

Book Return Policy

Students should always save their book receipt! In order to receive full credit for textbook refunds at the University Bookstore, students must show their receipt. For book returns, new books must be unmarked and undamaged, and shrink wraps must be unopened. Students may return books for full refund within 7 days after the semester begins.

Parent Tip: Students should finalize their schedule before opening the shrink wrap.

Departments that do Administrative Drops/Class Attendance is IMPORTANT!

Students need to be qualified on the Math Placement Exam (MPE) for the math course for which they are registered by FRIDAY, AUGUST 21. Students who do not do so will be administratively dropped from their math course. If your student is uncertain about their math situation (i.e. does not know if they received a course permit at NSE to register for a course for which they needed to qualify for by August 21) they should call their adviser. If after the drop, your student is not a full-time student (enrolled in 12 hours) your student will need to add a course.

Modern Language department administratively drops students who do not attend the first day of class.

Finally, your student should recognize that the ENGLISH department has a strict attendance policy.

Student Development

Common issues students face the first month of college

  • This is an exciting place!
  • I have anxiety about my roommate and professors.
  • I am homesick and lonely.
  • I am testing my new-found freedom.

How the parent/guardian can assist...

  • Help your student move into his residence hall room so you are familiar with their living environment.
  • If Lincoln is a new city for your student, during move-in weekend, help them find the local grocery and superstores they may need to visit during the semester.
  • Send C.A.R.E. packages to your student from home; include pictures of younger siblings or the family pet!
  • When your student calls home upset, remember to listen and breathe! Keep in mind there will be many ups and downs during the first semester. The campus resources you learned about during New Student Enrollment can be useful in these conversations. (http://www.unl.edu/ous/academic_support/support.shtml).
