Upperclass Scholarship Application

Now that your student is attending UNL, they must file the UPPERCLASS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION to be considered for college and departmental academic scholarships during the next academic year (yes, it is already time to do this for next year).  All current students must file this form regardless of standing-FR, SO, JR, SR.  Students can access this form on their WAM account. We encourage students to do it now so they do not forget!  The deadline is FEBRUARY 1, 2009.

Parent Tip:  To be considered for college and departmental scholarships, students must have a declared major.

Co-requisites and Pre-requisites [Course Registration Requirements]

When registering for classes for the spring term, your student needs to remember the following terms to avoid registration frustration:

Course PRE-Requisites:
Course prerequisites are established by academic departments to indicate the level of preparation necessary to be successful in a course. For example, some 200-level classes may require that students have completed (or in the process of completing) a 100-level in the same department. Or, for another example, the College of Business Administration does not allow students with freshman status (less than 27 earned hours) to register for beginning Accounting (201) and Economics (211 and 212) courses.
Some departments allow students to register for courses for which they are not eligible but then later drop them from the roster once they have determined the student has not met the course prerequisite. It is the responsibility of the student to insure that they will have the stated prerequisite completed by the first class period. The Undergraduate Bulletin and the Schedule of Classes list the prerequisites for each course. Instructors may grant a student permission to take a course without the stated prerequisite.

Course CO-Requisites:
Course co-requisite means that the course has supplementary parts in addition to the main lecture. For example, to register on WAM for Chemistry 109, students must submit call numbers for a lecture section, a laboratory section and a recitation section that all have the same group code (i.e. LEC A goes with RECI A and LAB A). The laboratory and recitation are the “co requisites” for the lecture. The WAM system prevents students from registering for a course if they fail to submit all call numbers for the required co requisites.

Parent Tip:
Understanding the “academic lingo” can help students reduce frustration level during the registration period.  Checking the pre-requisite and co-requisite requirements BEFORE actually registering for classes can make the registration progress smoothly.

Counseling and Psychological Services/Women’s Center/Health Center services:

Now is the time in the semester that your student may communicate to you that they are stressed or are experiencing depression or anxiety.  We encourage you to visit with your student about seeking professional services to help with these issues.

Students pay fees each semester for support services that can help them succeed in the classroom and on campus.  Some of the services UNL offers can be particularly helpful to students who feel stressed.  Counseling and Psychological Services (in the Health Center) provides professional counseling services.   A full-time counselor is also the Director of the Women’s Center (in the city campus Union).   This office provides a variety of services that can be particularly beneficial to women.  Physical health needs are addressed by the Health Center doctors, nurses and staff.

Parent Tip:   The first three counseling visits are at no charge for any student during their enrollment at UNL. Charges begin with the fourth visit and are based on an hourly rate. There is a charge for all visits with a psychiatrist. Remember, most of our services are offered at rates below community rates. Insurance may cover counseling visits depending upon the insurance plan.

Priority Registration for Spring term

Students attend New Student Enrollment to register for their first semester classes.  To register for their next term classes, students will go through “Priority Registration” (PR).  PR means we set aside specific days for students to register on WAM for their next semester classes.

Registration for spring term for freshman is scheduled for  November 6-10.

We prioritize enrollment times by the number of hours students have completed (in-progress hours do not count in the hours completed number):

  • Seniors (89 hours + completed) - October 26-28
  • Juniors  (53 to 88 hours completed) - October 29-November 2
  • Sophomores (27 to 52 hours completed) - November 3-5
  • Freshmen (0-27 hours completed) - November 6-10

Students with holds on their record cannot register for classes.  Students should check their WAM account now to learn if they have holds that will prevent them from registering for classes (tuition due, library fee, parking tickets, transcript holds etc.).  The Student Accounts office will only clear holds paid by check after the check has cleared the bank (may take up to 2 weeks).

Parent Tip:  Students think they must meet with their adviser on their priority registration day.  This is not accurate.  Advisers can meet to talk with students about their courses at any point, but students cannot actually register for their courses until their priority date arrives. Encourage your student to meet with their academic adviser two to three weeks (NOW!) before their scheduled priority registration date arrives.

Student Development

Now is the time that…

  • Roommate problems begin to arise
  • Students ask themselves the question: “Do I fit in here?”
  • First test grades returned
  • Midterm exams occur
  • Relationships at home remain strong
  • Students experience consequences of decision making
