Academic Resources

UNL has many resources that students can take advantage of to help them succeed in their classes. The services listed on the OUS website paid for by the fees you and your student pay each semester, so your student should take full advantage of what UNL has to offer in assistance.

Parent Tip:
What your student may not yet understand is that college is different from high school in that they need to ask for help if they are experiencing difficulty. UNL has many services, but students need to take the initiative. We want students to develop as young adults, and part of this process involves being an active participant in their education.

Pass/No Pass Grading Option

Through the 8th week of class (October 16), students may change their grade option for courses from a grade to the pass/no pass (P/N) option (and vice versa).  If a student takes a course on the P/N basis and earns a grade of “C” or better, they will receive a “P” for the course.  Grades lower than a “C” will post to the student’s record as an“N” for the course.  A “P” means the student passed the course and that the credit may be used to meet degree requirements.  An “N” means the student did not pass the course.  Thus no degree credit is awarded.  Only credit taken for a grade will calculate into the student’s gpa.

The option is designed to enable students to “try” a subject without feeling grade pressure.  Some students use the option to “manage” their gpa if they are experiencing trouble in a course.  Using the P/N option in this way is an unfortunate habit to get into,  and we hope your student will not use the option in this way.

Parent Tip: Students should always check with an adviser before changing a course to the P/N option, as each college and department has specific rules about this option (i.e. some requirements should not be taken on the P/N option).  Scholarships, dean’s list consideration and academic standing can also be impacted.  A caution: students should not wait until the last minute to make the change on their WAM page!

Career Fair

Attending a career fair is a great way for students who are deciding on a major to learn about possible careers related to a variety of majors.  The fair is scheduled for October 6, 7, 8.  Three  Days! Three Big Events!  Over 200 organizations will talk with students and alumni from all majors about full-time work and internship opportunities. To view the Career Fair website, visit <http://www.unl.edu/careers/fallfair/>.

Parent Tip:  First-year students are often shy about attending this event because they think the career fair is only for people who are ready to find employment upon graduation.  The truth is that talking to professionals is probably the best way for deciding students to gather information about what they can actually DO with a specific degree.  Suits and resumes are not necessary for the student attending the fair for exploration purposes.  Encourage your student to look nice and have a list of questions ready to ask the professionals in the field!

Mid-Semester Check Reminder

Reminder:  The Mid-Semester Check Program is scheduled for September 16, 17, 21, 22.  Encourage your student to go to this event ONE night for timely information that we feel is important for student success inside and outside of the classroom.

Tuition Refund for Dropped Courses Reminder

Friday, September 18th, is the last day students can drop full-semester courses and receive a 25% tuition refund.

Tuition Deadline:  The tuition deadline was last week (September 9).  A late fee of $20.00 has been charged and a hold has been placed on the record of students who have not paid their bill.

Parent Tip: Make arrangements to attend Parents Weekend on OCTOBER 2-4, 2009.  http://parentsassoc.unl.edu/weekend/
