The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
Spring break has come and gone and we are in the headlong rush to the end of the semester. Papers and projects are in the last stages and you are beginning to think about final exams. It is important to spend some time to stay organized. Make sure you know all deadlines and where and when your finals will be given. Check your printed Schedule of Classes (one reason to keep it) or the on-line Finals Schedule at http://www.unl.edu/regrec/grades/final_main.shtml. More details should be in your course syllabus.
The worldwide economic situation has everyone thinking about their personal economic situation. With limited resources, college students have to be especially mindful of their income and expenses. There are resources to help you track your current spending and consider various options including increased or decreased earnings and major purchases or expenses. Check your bank or credit union website for information. Remember, students are eligible to join the University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union. Their web has a link to free budget software. https://www.nufcu.org/Financial_Education.asp. Another good source of information is http://www.mymoney.gov/.
Six Simple Rules. Credit cards can be good tools, but can also get you in over your head quickly. Keep these rules in mind
- One is enough. Multiple cards simply mean multiple bills and payments than can add up that much faster.
- Read the fine print. Look for grace periods, finance charges, late payment or missed payment charges, and annual fees. Is the interest rate fixed or variable and how does it change after late or missed payments, or exceeding your credit limit? Watch for changes in terms.
- Do not carry the credit card with you. It is less likely to be lost or to be used for impulse purchases. Do you really want to be paying interest on lattes or pizza?
- If you use it pay the balance in full, within the grace period, if possible. It avoids interest and fees.
- If you cannot pay in full ALWAYS pay more than the minimum. The minimum balance is designed the make the credit card company maximum profit.
- Keep good records. Notify the company of any change of address. Keep all statements and a record of your payments. Have a record of the card number and the phone number to call if the card is ever lost or stolen. Identity theft is very costly.
RefWorks workshop
Manage citations and create bibliographies with RefWorks! Attend a RefWorks workshop Thurs. April 9 3-4:30 p.m. or Wed. April 22 3-4:30 p.m. in Love Library South Room 111. Contact Brian Keiser at bkeiser2@unl.edu or 472-3411 to sign up.
RefWorks automatically formats citations or references in the style you need, imports citations from databases such as Academic Search Premier and PsycINFO, and allows you to share references with classmates. It also has a Write-N-Cite utility to pull citations into your paper as you type. RefWorks is available from the Libraries at http://iris.unl.edu
Summer Independent Study Open House will be held April 1, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Nebraska Union (in the Union Square area). This event gives you an opportunity to meet the instructors, read syllabi, and register for courses you can complete over the summer, whether you are on campus or away from campus. Over 70 courses are offered this year and registration runs through May. This can be a great way for transfer students to pick up a few hours to make your schedule more flexible next fall.
