The Transfer Connection

Greetings,

Like me, you may have experienced a road trip this summer. Many use global positioning navigation systems (GPS) in vehicles or on cell phones. It is easy to see their popularity. They are up to date and accurate. They provide amazing detail and some systems even guide you to the nearest gas station or sushi bar. I confess I still find the glove box fold-out map indispensable. I love their frayed creases, their sometimes quirky symbols -- even the challenge of refolding them. But they also help me see a wider perspective. I can see the obstacle the GPS would simply route me around. My eye can drift from the highway number to interesting city and county names, to hidden scenic treasures and to nearby attractions. I can add a few hours to my trip or plan for them the next trip. Both GPS and maps have their advantages, and perhaps we need both.

Whether you are planning your last summer road trip or your university degree, I invite you to look for the wider perspective and see interesting possibilities as experiences that can enrich the journey. Consider study abroad, a research experience, or an internship. Think about an additional major or minor, or a leadership role in a campus organization. This may be your only opportunity for some of these side trips and they may well be worth adding a summer or even a semester to your plan. Start thinking about how to fit them into your degree. Talk about the possibilities with your adviser, a faculty mentor, your classmates. Remember -- life is not always about the shortest path.

Be ready for the new semester. Pull out your class schedule and make sure you know where your classes are and where you will park or which bus you need. See the Transition web site http://transition.unl.edu/ . Building abbreviations and links to Parking & Transportation are found in the "Getting Around Campus" section. "Adapting to Lincoln" will direct you to "Interlinc", a nice resource for Lincoln including downtown parking, Lincoln libraries, Parks & Recreation and Bus Transportation (StarTran). Don't forget about the bus pass all students receive to ride any StarTran bus for free. The intercampus bus schedule is on the campus parking and transportation page.

The UNL Web pages will all take on a new look in a few days, so be prepared to spend a little extra time locating familiar content. I think you will like the new functionality but change always requires adaptation.

The Confucius Institute at UNL is offering non-credit courses in Chinese language, culture and music. Classes are taught by university language instructors from Xi'an Jiao Tong University, a top 10 Chinese university. They are offered in both Omaha and Lincoln and begin in September. Registration forms are available in W205 Nebraska Hall and on-line. If you have questions regarding these classes contact 472-5370 or jyoung@unlnotes.unl.edu.
