Newsletter for Transfer Students

The Transfer Connection

August 25, 2008

Greetings!

Welcome to UNL and to the Transfer Connection. It is an email that you will receive each week during the semester and monthly in the summer. It is sent via list serve and you may request at any time to be removed from the list. All students are removed after one year. Those who wish to continue receiving it after a year may ask to stay on the list. In addition to a few reminders, it includes some advice and events you may want to consider. Many students respond to the email to ask questions. Be aware that sometimes those email requests go in my Spam filter and I may not see them until the next day. I check the filter every morning, but if you need an answer, try phoning.

First, here are some announcements about events especially for new students.

Nontraditional Students Special Welcome Thursday August 28th Love Library Room 111. 3:30 - 4:00 pm Welcome, and 4:00 to 5:00pm Technology Workshop. Learn to use UNL's on-line resources and other software you will need every day. Refreshments provided. RSVP to okovtun2@unl.edu. At UNL, nontraditional students identify themselves. The group often includes students who may be older than traditional college students, or who are attending part time, who have family, work, community or other obligations that compete with school for time, energy, and resources.

All Transfer Student Welcome Thursday, September 4, 5:30 to 6:30 pm
Ice Cream Social
Love Library Instruction Room (Room 110, Love South)
Enjoy some UNL Dairy Store ice cream and chat with current and new transfer students. Get to know officials from your college. There will not be a formal program, but college representatives will be introduced at about 5:45. College deans, advisers and library staff often take the opportunity to meet and talk informally with new transfer students. I hope you will join us. It is hosted by Phi Theta Kappa Alumni, and Tau Sigma, National Transfer Students Honor Society.

If you were a member of Phi Theta Kappa at any two year school, you are invited to join our PTK Alumni. This small group encourages continued academic achievement, as well as fellowship and service.

Transfer Honor Society--All transfer students who bring at least a year of credit (27 hours), are degree seeking, full-time students, and who earn at least a 3.5 GPA in the first semester at UNL are invited to join Tau Sigma. These two groups often collaborate on social or service projects, and activities like the Ice Cream Social.

Transition Web Page. Transfer students helped create a web page for new transfer students. http://transition.unl.edu Find information about campus, the community of Lincoln, and finding things on the UNL web page www.unl.edu/. There are resources for getting your transfer credit evaluated, and for nontraditional students.

Make sure UNL has your final transcript from all previous institutions. You can check admission status in WAM! https://wam.unl.edu/wam/login.jsp If you are finishing a class make sure to have a transcript sent when it is complete. Lack of final transcript will put a hold on your record and you will not be able to register for spring semester. Registration will begin in October.

Tuition and Fees deadline. Wednesday, September 10. You will receive email notifying you that your bill is ready for viewing on WAM!. It is your responsibility to make sure it is paid, or if parents or others are helping, that they have access to the bill. You can grant them access in WAM! Overdue accounts also put a hold on your record. If you pay the overdue account by check it can take up to two weeks to clear.

Student Accounts include NCard charges, so keep your account up to date. The Student Accounts web page http://stuaccts.unl.edu/ is a good resource and has contact information if you have further questions.
