The Transfer Connection

Greetings,

The end of semester rush is here. Time seems to fly after the Thanksgiving break when papers and projects are due. Add a Holiday party and some shopping and your stress level can elevate. Stress affects your immune system just when colds and fly are in season so take care of yourself. Start studying for finals early. Be thoughtful about what you ingest. And get some rest. Seek help when you need it.

Basics for final exams:

  • Know what to bring. Stock up on blue books, pencils, pens with blue/black ink, scratch paper, etc.
  • Take what you need and only what you need. (Blue book - yes, Cell phone -no, Calculator - depends on the course)
  • Know where and when. Arrive early. Allow extra time for parking/walking to exam site.
  • Be rested and fed. The all nighter will not help if you fall asleep during the exam.
  • Read the exam carefully and follow directions.
  • Watch the time. Don't spend too much time on any one question. Leave time to look over your answers for glaring mistakes.
  • Concentrate on what you know.
  • Think ahead about what you want to say on the Course Evaluation. Prepare for these as well by considering the objectives of the course and how the material, assignments, and resources helped you meet those objectives.

No Transfer Connection next week. Since you will be busy studying and I will be away from my office next week, this will be the last Transfer Connection for the semester. If you transferred to UNL in January 2008, you will not receive the Transfer Connection after January 2009 unless you request to stay on the list. Simply reply to this email with Stay on the List for a subject.

Are you building relationships with professionals in and out of class? This is one thing students and graduates say makes a real difference. Talking about your goals and plans with a professor can help you look at things differently. Professors have great experience and great contacts. Finding a mentor is a skill you can always use.

The semester break is always a good time to pause and reflect. Take some notes in your journal or ongoing file about what you accomplished this semester--in your classes, at work, and in your co-curricular and volunteer activities. What did you learn? What do you want to learn next semester? How will you change what you are doing to effect the changes you want?
