The Transfer Connection

Greetings,

Many students take courses, including on-line classes, from other institutions. Remember to have your transcripts sent to the Office of Admission to be included in your degree audit. If the course you took has no direct equivalent at UNL you may need to see your adviser to see about substituting the course. If you have taken or are considering a course from one of our sister campuses in the NU system (UNK or UNO) there is a new searchable database called CourseFinder to help you locate course equivalents. See https://coursefinder.nebraska.edu/. For courses from other institutions see the Transfer Course Equivalency List at http://nebraska.unl.edu/tequiv/. If you are considering taking a course that does not appear, check with your adviser to see if it will work in your degree plan.

Integrative learning is becoming more important in higher education. Essentially it means to explore and build on the connections between courses or disciplines. It is evident in interdisciplinary courses and so-called capstone courses which ask you to pull together skills and knowledge you have learned into a final course or project or paper. It is important for you to consciously explore and build connections every day, between what you learn in your major courses and general education classes, as well as what you learn on your job and in other areas outside of class. Your education is not one segment of your life, but impacts every aspect of your life. And studies of learning indicate that the more ways you connect new information to what you already know, the more likely you will remember the new information.

The Academic Calendar is on-line at http://www.unl.edu/regrec/calendar/calendar_main.shtml. It has important information like this:
January 30 (Fri.) Last day to withdraw from a full semester course and receive 50% refund
February 11 (Wed.) Tuition and fee payment deadline

Another on-line resource I frequently use is the Academic Handbook here: http://www.unl.edu/regrec/acadserv/AcademicServicesHandbook.pdf

The PDF bookmarks can help you find information. See the icon in the left margin.

It is cold and flu season. Do the simple things to take care of yourself, like hand washing and getting enough sleep. If you get sick seek assistance at the University Health Center. http://health.unl.edu/

EVENTS

Thursday, January 29, 7:30 pm, Lied Center for Performing Arts
Chiara String Quartet
Banned in the USSR, with guest soprano Lucy Shelton
In the former Soviet Union, artists were often monitored for unpatriotic expression. The Borodin String Quartet was a victim of this scrutiny; even their choice of concert repertoire had to be cleared with the government. One such program, proposed by the Borodin Quartet in 1975, was deemed unacceptable by the authorities. The Chiara Quartet is proud to present this “forbidden” program: String Quartet, Op. 3, by Alban Berg; String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10, by Arnold Schöenberg with Lucy Shelton; String Quartet, Op. 51; The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross by Franz Joseph Haydn. Students qualify for half price tickets. http://www.liedcenter.org

Wednesday, February 4, 3:30 - 4:30 pm Hardin Hall (East Campus)
Spring 2009 Water Seminar Series
Mary P. Skopec, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, "2008 Iowa Floods and Water Quality Implications: What's Really in the Water?" Host: Mike Jess.

Thursday, January 30 through Thursday, February 5, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center
"The Battle for Whiteclay"
This film follows Native American activists Frank LaMere, Duane Martin and Russell Means through the streets of Whiteclay to the halls of Nebraska's State Capitol in their campaign to end alcohol sales in the place Nebraska newspapers have dubbed "Skid Row on the Prairie." http://www.TheRoss.org

Cheers,
JoAnn
