The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
I smile every time I drive by the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln. Whether it is a brief respite from a hot, busy summer day or a leisurely stroll, I recommend this spot at 27th and Capital Parkway to refresh your spirit. Did you know you can volunteer there and learn about gardening? See http://www.lincoln.ne.gov/city/parks/volunteer/publicgardens.htm. The Sunken Gardens were built in 1930 as a project to create jobs for unemployed in another period of difficult economic times. Renovations in 2004 included redesigned flower beds, new public restrooms and parking, the Rotary Pavilion, and new art pieces. Volunteering is part of our shared responsibility in a democracy, much like voting. One of the outcomes in Achievement Centered Education or ACE, UNL's new general education program, involves ethical principles and stewardship of our shared resources. We take advantage of many public parks, gardens, and programs, and we have a responsibility to see that others have the same opportunity.
The new university child care center is expected to open this August in the north annex of the newly renovated Whittier Junior High School, 22nd and Vine. The Children’s Center will provide care for children of UNL students, staff, faculty, alumni and the families of Lincoln. Priority will be given to families that have a tie to the university. Limited space is available. See more information and rates at http://childcare.unl.edu/index.php
