The Transfer Connection

Greetings,
It seems summer has arrived. Dig out the sun screen, floppy hat and lemonade. Spend a little time on the front porch getting to know your neighbors. Sneak in a few minutes to think about your educational/career goals. Do your goals need a little clarification? Perhaps you need to find time with a mentor to make sure you are on track. Time to completion is important, but so are opportunities you may not have again. Think in terms of skills you build or experience you gain, rather than a line you can add to your resume.

Technology has given us wonderful communication options, but sometimes we forget how intrusive electronics have become. More gadgets are showing up in classrooms and meeting rooms. Where do you draw the line? Do you use the laptop to take notes or check Facebook? Even if you are not talking on your cell phone are you texting? Watching last night's episode of Idol? Here is one simple guideline. Think about why you are in the class/meeting. Does the device improve your learning/productivity? If not, it can be a distraction to you and others and may be seen as rude by your professor, boss, classmates or coworkers. Even if you believe you multi task well, research shows you are less likely to remember things you learned while shifting focus. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-07/uoc--maa072506.php
