Newsletter for Transfer Students

The Transfer Connection

Greetings,

Many students do not consider graduate school until they near completion of a bachelor's degree, but it is important to consider the possibility much earlier, especially for transfer students who have less time on campus. The Office of Academic Support & Intercultural Services (OASIS) is sponsoring a McNair Program Informational on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Culture Center. Established in 1986 by the U.S. Department of Education and named for astronaut and Challenger space shuttle crew member Ronald McNair, UNL's McNair Scholars Program encourages students to pursue graduate studies by providing opportunities to define goals, engage in research, and develop the skills and student/faculty mentor relationships critical to success at the doctoral level.

The McNair Scholars Program prepares selected UNL undergraduates for graduate study at the doctoral level. Ten to fifteen new McNair Scholars are selected each year to participate in both academic and summer activities. The McNair Scholars Program aims to increase numbers of underrepresented students in doctoral programs. For more information, please visit http://www.unl.edu/mcnair/

Intimidated by Scholarship Essays?
Writing essay's for scholarships is not an impossible task. The essay or statement is simply a way for the scholarship committee to get to know you. It gives you a voice, a third dimension, for the committee to consider. Shape your personal statements not with facts - those are already listed on your application and resume - but with stories that support the facts.
Begin the writing process by brainstorming your responses to the given statement. Being vivid, and setting a scene is more important than being creative. Proofread your statement. Minor spelling and grammatical errors are the easiest way for scholarship committees to weed out applicants.
Final tips for writing a scholarship essay:

  1. Address the statement provided.
  2. Follow the guidelines. One page commonly refers to one page typed and double spaced.
  3. Proofread!
