The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
Are your registered for spring semester? Don't delay. If the course you want is full, keep checking back as students use open registration to tweak their schedules. The course you need may have an opening. You can also check on-line courses. These can be useful if you are having trouble working around your employment or family schedule. See http://onlineundergraduate.unl.edu/programs/onlinedistance/index.shtml Semester based courses can help you meet full time student status.
UCARE--applications will be due Friday, February, 2010. That means this is the time to find a faculty sponsor and consider your proposal for next academic year. It is especially important for transfer students to think about UCARE early as you have less time to plan. This program provides funding for undergraduates to incorporate a research or creative activity into their study, In the first year of the program the student essentially works for the faculty sponsor as a research assistant, learning on the job, while earning an hourly wage. In the second year the student goes on to an independent research project, working with the faculty sponsor. Some transfer students elect a one-year project. Read more http://www.unl.edu/ucare/ and see the kinds of projects students are currently undertaking.
A UCARE faculty sponsor often becomes a mentor, but other professors or advisers can be mentors. They have knowledge and experience and are often willing to share. Why should you think about a mentor?
Top Ten Reasons to Find a Mentor
10. S/he can double-check your progress toward your degree and make sure you are on the way to timely graduation. (You have the primary responsibility for your degree.)
9. Professionals have access to information. (which course will not be offered next term because the professor will be on sabbatical, or who needs a research assistant)
8. Advisers are trained to refer you to other sources of information. (where to go for assistance in a tough class or what to do if you are sick and miss class)
7. They know about the field in which you want to be employed, and even better, they know people currently working in that field. (think job shadowing, internships, scholarships, letters of reference)
6. Advisers and professors know about some really cool Study Abroad opportunities, and can help you get the credit applied to your degree.

China's rise is one of the transformative events of our time as well as one of the most important challenges facing U.S. foreign and economic policy.
