The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
As you prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday I hope you get a chance to enjoy friends and family and relax before the urgency of the last weeks of the semester. This holiday is about gratitude. Here is what John F. Kennedy had to say: As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.
UCARE is a unique UNL program in which students are paid to work with a faculty mentor on research or creative activities. Designed as a two year program, the second year is optional and many transfer students are in the program for one year. Build your skills as well as a relationship with a professor while you earn money. Each student must submit an application with the faculty mentor. If you have not considered UCARE, first find out more at http://www.unl.edu/ucare. Then think about research you are interested in. What kind of research are your professors doing? Check out your college or department web pages. The UCARE web page lists the projects that were funded for this year and may give you ideas. Applications are due Friday, February 13, 2009 for the 2009-10 academic year.
Information Services (IS) offers a broad range of technology services designed to meet the computing, communications, and networking needs of UNL students. They can assist as you register your wireless connection, check out equipment (laptop, projector, etc) use uniprint, find computer labs, or download free anti-virus software. IS can also help you back up files or share files too large to email. More at: http://is.unl.edu/
You do not believe everything you read on the internet, but how do you evaluate sites? Some excellent resources are available at:
http://www.unl.edu/libr/inet/cite.shtml. When in doubt contact a librarian, preferably one who is a liaison in your area of study. Subject specialists at the libraries are listed here: http://www.unl.edu/libr/liaison/subjsubj.shtml.
Happy Thanksgiving,
