The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
I hope you went by the Study Abroad Fair on Tuesday. There were many displays and people to answer your questions. If you were unable to attend try the Study Abroad website for more information, or talk with your adviser about possibilities. http://www.unl.edu/iaffairs/study_abroad/study_abroadindex.shtml
The Fall Career Fair is next week. See Events below for days and locations. This is a great opportunity whether you are ready to interview for a full time job or just want to see how the fair works and ask some questions. (What can you do now to prepare for specific careers?) You see how professionals in your field dress and act. Write down some questions you want to ask. Career Services has tips on their web page and even a presentation on how to prepare this Thursday, October 2. http://www.unl.edu/careers/events/cfprep.shtml
Take good care of your credit. As you can see by the news, even big financial institutions do not always make sound decisions, and can see the consequences. Practice the basics. Don't count on Congress to bail you out.
- Read all the fine print when you apply for credit.
- Think carefully about purchasing with credit.
- Track your expenditures, payments, interest rate, grace periods, and due dates.
- Pay the balance in full if possible. Always pay more than the minimum.
Your local financial institution is a good source of consumer information. Here are more resources: NU Federal Credit Union--Students can join: https://www.nufcu.org/, and the Nebraska Bankers Association: http://www.nebankers.org/public/consumer.html.
As you make an appointment to see your adviser here are excerpts from Dr. Mom's Guide to College. Dr. Mom is a biology professor, academic adviser, and parent of a college student. http://www.lions.odu.edu/~kkilburn/dr_mom_home.htm
- Do your homework before you show up for your academic advising appointment. Bring a catalog, a schedule of classes (if one is available), a current transcript that includes the courses you're taking that semester, and a couple of plans for your coursework the following semester. Also make a list of any questions you have about your requirements, academic progress, etc. Your preparedness will make your advisor very happy.
- Follow your advisor's advice. If you decide to follow your own advice, it's no use whining when you discover that after 3 years of coursework you're still 3 years from graduating.
