Newsletter for Transfer Students

The Transfer Connection

Greetings!

Update your official email in WAM! whether you change to the new huskers account or use another provider. Official university business is sent to your email address and you are expected to read it. This includes the bill for your consolidated student account. If you miss the deadline for payment you incur a $20 late fee, and a hold is placed on your record. A hold means you cannot get a transcript or register for a class, etc. If you pay by check to clear the hold it can take ten days or more for the check to clear and the hold to be removed. Bills are due the second Wednesday of each month.

Make sure UNL has received final transcripts from your previous institutions or a hold can be placed on your record. You can check your Admission Status in WAM! to make sure the transcript arrived.

Voting by absentee ballot? Make sure you know deadlines for requesting and returning your ballot. Some jurisdictions allow early voting. Check with the election commission where you are registered to vote. Try googling "absentee ballot or early vote your state". Your vote does make a difference.

Identity theft can affect anyone. College students may be at greater risk, especially if they do not take precautionary measures like shredding documents and using antivirus software and firewalls. Using public computers or using personal computers in public can be dangerous if you enter personal information. Students tend to live in close quarters where others can access personal data. Other tips to avoid becoming a victim:
Keep your personal data in a safe place (SSN, credit card, etc)

  • Review credit card and bank statements
  • Don't let your mail pile up if you are away
  • Limit personal information on social networking sites

Read more from the Identity Fraud Survey Report. http://www.idsafety.net/803.R_2008%20Identity%20Fraud%20Survey%20Report_Consumer%20Version.pdf

You may need an official transcript for a scholarship or for student discounts on insurance. Transcripts are a service of the Office of Registration and Records. You can now order transcripts through WAM! There is no charge for transcripts, but here may be charges for special services like overnight delivery. Your account must be clear of all holds to get an official transcript. http://www.unl.edu/regrec/grades/transcripts.shtml.
