The Transfer Connection

Greetings,

Daylight Savings time ends this weekend.  Remember to set your clocks back an hour Saturday night and enjoy that extra hour of sleep.  That also means it is time to winterize your wardrobe and your vehicle.  Dig out your boots and gloves before the snow falls.  Check on the weather before you start out, especially if you are driving out of town.  http://www.511nebraska.org/ndortip/index.jsp will give you road conditions and traffic cameras around the state so you can see what roads look like before you leave town.

Find out about Lincoln's Snow Emergency plan here:  http://lincoln.ne.gov/city/pworks/engine/traffic/snow/#s.  If you park on the street it is vital to know when your street will be plowed and whether you need to move your vehicle to prevent tickets or towing.

Take good care of your credit. Practice the basics to make responsible decisions.

  • Read the fine print when you apply for credit and when notified of changes.
  • Think carefully before purchasing with credit.
  • Track your expenditures, payments, interest rate, grace periods, and due dates.
  • Pay the balance in full if possible. Always pay more than the minimum.

Your local financial institution is a good source of consumer information. Here are more resources:
NU Federal Credit Union--Students can join: www.nufcu.org/Financial_Education.asp,
Nebraska Bankers Association: www.nebankers.org/public/consumer/calculator.html
Federal Trade Commission:  www.ftc.gov/gettingcredit/
Financial Literacy and Education Commission www.mymoney.gov/calculators.shtml.

If you have not met with your adviser remember priority registration is a busy time.  Appointments may not be available.  There may be only walk in service.  You may only be able to discuss the spring semester.  Now that you know how to locate your adviser, make an appointment for next month and take all your questions about requirements, your progress and other issues.  Think about your education and career goals so that you can discuss them with your adviser.  Discuss ways an internship could benefit you and when you should begin the application process.  Find out if graduate or professional school will be required for the career you want to pursue.

Check your department office bulletin board/web site for information on upcoming activities, lecture series, symposia.  See the UNL Calendar for campus wide events.  http://events.unl.edu/  These can be great ways to build relationships with other students, grad students and faculty.

I am your campus referral for the resources you need to be successful so don’t hesitate to ask questions.  I am also interested in your feedback about the Transfer Connection and your experience at UNL.
