The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
In another week this election will be history. And because of its historic implications whichever candidate is elected to the presidency, it underscores our civic responsibility to vote. The act of voting seems almost anticlimactic after the months of campaign rhetoric, debates, ads, late night levity and YouTube. Many things affect the campaigns and are affected by them, including events--or not--at UNL. It is hard work to thoughtfully deliberate about candidates and other ballot issues. I am reminded every election that democracy is messy and is hard work. We have to consider what is best for us as individuals as well as what is best for our community or nation. At times we may have to put the greater good ahead of our own. But ultimately I believe grappling with the issues is an investment each of us has to make in our future. So, do your homework and vote!
A job opportunity for transfer students. The New Student Enrollment Office is now accepting applications for Orientation Leaders for the summer of 2009. Orientation Leader positions are open to students who are presently, sophomores, junior or seniors. There is a real need for the applicants who are transfer students.
For many students, being an Orientation Leader has been one of the most rewarding experiences of their college career. Living in Lincoln during the summer for free while making a competitive wage with overtime, gaining new friends, working with other leaders on campus, and impacting the lives of incoming transfer students and freshmen are just a few of the benefits. You also have the opportunity to work with and get to know faculty and administrators from the University.
The application and detailed information is available on-line at nse.unl.edu . Review of applications will begin on November 10, 2008 at 5:00 pm. Several questions are on the application and have references must be turned in by November 10. Now is the time to think about applying.
Flu shots are available at the University Health Center. http://health.unl.edu/flu/ has dates, details, and consent forms. Keep in mind students have contact with many other people, tend to have high stress levels, and may not always make the best choices about eating and sleeping, all of which affect your immune system. Seriously consider getting a flu shot. Cost is $20 and your insurance may reimburse you.
