Newsletter for Transfer Students

The Transfer Connection

Greetings,

Transition is work. You have to learn to move around comfortably in the new environment and locate resources to help you succeed. It takes time and energy away from your studies. To help you in the transition, there is a new on-line resource, created with input from transfer students who have been successful at UNL. It will help you navigate the campus, the UNL web, and the Lincoln community. It includes links to other useful tools and information. Find it at http://transition.unl.edu/ I would love to hear what you find useful or how it could be improved.

New email address? Students are encouraged to use the new, free, Husker email accounts. If you change to the new husker account, be sure to change your email address in WAM! The Transfer Connection uses a listserv with the email address you had on file at the beginning of the semester, so it would help if you notify me of your new email address.

Now that you have been in class for a few weeks, you probably have questions you weren't ready to ask at New Student Enrollment. Midsemester Checkpoint is designed to help answer questions from new students. Due to its popularity, the same program will be offered each night, September 15 through 18 in Nebraska Union. On Tuesday, September 16, at 6:30 pm a special session will be offered for transfer students. While freshmen view skits in the Auditorium, you can ask questions of a panel of current transfer students. The skit/student panel will be followed by short breakout sessions on various topics led by faculty and staff. If you are unable to attend Tuesday, you may attend the sessions another night. See the full schedule and get a description of the sessions at http://www.unl.edu/ous/checksessions.shtml

Session topics are:

  • Finding A Major Right For Me
  • Surviving College Math
  • Research - Just do it!
  • Study Abroad? Me?
  • Finding Success in the Large Classroom: Understanding the View
  • The Next Step: Spring Semester
  • Academic Success
  • Writing for College
  • Tools for Success: On-line Resources
  • Academic Opportunities & Support
  • Preparing for Professional Schools
  • Financial Planning
  • Paper Due? RefWorks [TM] helps
  • Time Management

Remember, transfer students are welcome at any of the four nights, but the special Transfer Student Panel will only be held Tuesday, 6:30 pm. in Centennial A, Nebraska Union. The student panel is made up of members from Phi Theta Kappa Alumni and Tau Sigma, transfer student honor societies.

Did you take some time between high school and college to work, start a family, or serve in the military? Are you on the 7 to 10+ year plan? Meet other non-traditional students, find resources and get support. Contact Marie at 472-2597 to see when the nontraditional student group meets this semester.
