The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
Meet with your adviser early in your first semester. Get to know him/her and help him/her get to know you. It may not be the person who advised you at New Student Enrollment. Find out how your adviser/advising center prefers to be contacted. Some allow you to make appointments on-line. Others expect you to use office hours. Respect your adviser's time and expertise. Each college handles advising differently. Some have advising centers and faculty advisers for the major, some have only faculty advising. If you are in General Studies you won't have an assigned adviser, you will use the walk-in services at the advising center. If you are not sure who your adviser is, check your degree audit in WAM! or contact me.
Know how your transfer credit applies to your degree. This is an important topic to discuss with your adviser. Any credit that did not have a UNL equivalent will be evaluated by your college. You may need to provide more information if a determination cannot be made from the transcript. If possible have a course syllabus available. http://www.unl.edu/ous/student_programs/general.shtml
Your adviser can also help you learn to read your degree audit. If you started this fall you also want to make sure you and your adviser determine whether to follow the 09-10 UNL Bulletin (catalog) with the new ACE General Education learning outcomes or request to go back to the 08-09 Bulletin with the ES/IS requirements.
Read your syllabi. Not just the dates when papers are due or exams given. Read the learning outcomes of the course...what are you expected to know or be able to do when you have successfully completed the course? What is in it for you? How do your courses this term relate to each other or to other courses? Think about ways you can link courses together. This is the best way to learn new information--link it to what you already know. Make connections.
Pay attention to written and unwritten rules and etiquette. Some classrooms/professors have strict policies regarding phones, iPods, laptops, recorders or other devices. If there is no specific policy, you are probably better off without the distractions. Check your text messages or Facebook after class.
Use the Events Calendar http://events.unl.edu/ to find interesting lectures, symposia, recitals, and many other university activities. I recommend you find at least one event each semester to attend. The variety is endless. It is a great way to interact with other students, grad students and faculty over topics that interest you.
