The Transfer Connection
Greetings,
MidSemester Check continues through tomorrow, Thursday, September 18. Tonight, Wednesday, is a special session for students undecided or deciding about a major. Career Services will make available a career assessment tool and students will have the opportunity to speak with representatives of the UNL colleges. If you missed the transfer student panel at Tuesday evening's program here is a summary of what successful transfer students told new students:
- Talk to your professors. Ask questions, even before you have difficulty.
- See your adviser early and get to know him/her.
- Plan ahead. Plan courses several semesters ahead so you don't end up with your 3 hardest courses in the same semester.
- Get to know people in your classes.
- Find at least one thing on campus to take part in outside of class.
One way to get involved outside of class is to attend a seminar, forum, or colloquium. What is a colloquium? Encarta says it is an academic conference or seminar in which a particular topic is discussed, often with guest speakers. In the case of the Nebraska Colloquium it is a series of lectures in which a variety of speakers from a multitude of backgrounds speak on a common subject - for the 2008-09 year, that subject is Democracy. To find events, see http://nebcolloquium.unl.edu/
Besides the UNL Calendar, there are many places to find information about such events. Read the Daily Nebraskan, peruse bulletin boards is the Union or your department office. Go on-line to UNL Today or your college or department web page to find events that pique your interest.
Plan ahead for Graduate and Professional School Programs. If you are interested in graduate or professional school, don't miss these valuable information sessions and door prizes including a KAPLAN course.
