The Transfer Connection
Greetings!
I hope you are enjoying the last warm days of early fall. Watch the last blooms fade and the colors change as we transition into a new season. It reminds us we are often in transition -- from one institution to another, from junior to senior, from single to committed relationship, or just from baseball to volleyball season. Appreciate the transitions of life.
Communication is important in any potential emergency situation, whether it is weather related or a threatening situation. If you have not done so you may sign up for UNL Alert which sends emergency messages to devices and addresses you designate: cell phones (text and voice), landline phones, PDAs, two-way radios, and e-mail addresses. It also has a desktop application that can be loaded on to personal computers to scroll emergency messages across your computer's screen. http://emergency.unl.edu/ There are also tips on how to be prepared for a variety of situations.
One of the great opportunities for students at a university like this one is the chance to study abroad. You can see another part of the world, meet people with very different experiences and learn about your subject area as well as another culture. Not many will have that kind of opportunity after college. Learn about the many opportunities at the Study Abroad Fair Tuesday, September 30 from 11:00 - 2:00 in Nebraska Union. Find resources to help you think about it at http://www.unl.edu/iaffairs/study_abroad/study_abroadindex.shtml
Are you struggling in a class? What should you do? Successful students say, "See the professor right away." If you have a conflict with the posted office hours call or email to see if you can find an a time to meet. Other good options may be to start a study group or find a "study buddy". Many departments offer resource rooms or other forms of assistance. Some are listed here: http://www.unl.edu/ous/academic_support/support.shtml. Advisers can help find resources as well.
Now is a good time to make an appointment with your adviser to think about your spring schedule. Priority registration will begin October 27. If you wait until then, appointments will be gone and you are likely to be waiting in lines. An adviser can help you think in larger terms--not just two semesters ahead, but how you can put courses, a minor, an emphasis, a research project or study abroad and your goals together to create a plan. A good plan will have structure and flexibility. Remember, advisers have information about which courses may be offered which terms, and other "inside information". Do you want an education that meets the minimum requirements or one that meets your personal goals?
If you are not sure who your adviser is you can check your Degree Audit in WAM!, check with your college advising center or dean's office, or contact me. It will likely be someone other than the person you saw at New Student Enrollment. If you are in General Studies either because you are undecided or are working on meeting requirements for your college, you will not have an adviser assigned, but walk-in hours are available in Suite #33 in the Canfield Administration Building
