Directions for Departmental Evaluators of Transfer Credit

Request for Departmental Review of Credit

Credit may transfer to UNL which does not have a direct equivalent UNL course. The student's degree college may substitute this credit into the individual student's degree plan.

The Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policy specifies instances in which transfer credit must be reviewed before it will transfer to UNL and be reflected on the student's UNL record. Most often this is because the credit is from an institution outside the United States or when the U.S. institution lacks regional accreditation. This includes institutions such as schools of nursing, music conservatories, or technical institutes which are reviewed by different types of accrediting agencies. It may include courses or programs determined by University of Nebraska-Lincoln to be of a developmental, vocational, or technical nature. The department evaluator reviews transfer credit evaluating the content, level, and comparability of the study to courses and programs at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For more information see the Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policy.

The following forms are used when transfer credit requires evaluation by the corresponding UNL department. A student may need to complete more than one form if the student presents credit from more than one department. For example, an engineering student with international credit may have math, physics, chemistry, and other general education credit. Each course must be evaluated by the department which offers corresponding credit at UNL.

The evaluation forms are on-line PDF forms which are designed to be completed electronically. Adobe Reader 8.0 is required to open all forms. It may be downloaded (free) at www.adobe.com. Forms may be emailed as attachments to you, the evaluator, completed electronically and then printed and signed. Blank forms may also be printed and then completed. Students are instructed to make an appointment with the evaluator, and to bring appropriate course documents to the appointment.

Credit from Institutions in the United States -- Use this form when the student has

  • transfer credit from an institution which lacks U.S. Regional Accreditation; OR
  • transfer credit from an institution which did not directly teach the course (credit was granted for seminar, exam, etc); OR
  • other instances where transfer credit from a US institution requires review. Credit designation on CHP or Degree Audit is NACC or DVAL.

International Transfer Credit -- Use this form when a transfer student has college level transfer credit from an institution outside the United States . A student may be referred to his/her Academic Adviser for a copy of the Courses Presented for Evaluation (CHP) for course titles. Credit designation on CHP or degree audit is IVAL. Advisers are encouraged to assist the student in determining the UNL department required to evaluate each course and to ensure that students have appropriate course documents available for the evaluator.

Study Abroad Credit -- Use when the student is a current UNL student who has participated in an approved Study Abroad program and the credit has been posted on a transcript by an institution outside the United States. Credit from an international institution will not be reflected on the student's UNL record until it is evaluated by the appropriate evaluator and the completed form is returned. Credit designation on CHP or degree audit is IVAL.

If the credit is posted to a transcript from an institution within the United States, the student should contact his/her Academic Adviser for possible substitution into the student's degree plan. Credit designation may be GNCR if no equivalent is designated.
