General Directions for Requesting a Department to Evaluate Your Transfer Credit

Transfer courses from many schools in the area have been evaluated by faculty and appear on the Transfer Course Equivalency List. This transfer credit rarely requires further evaluation. Your degree college will determine how all your credits will apply to your degree.

You may be advised that your transfer credit needs departmental review before it will apply to your degree. Most often this is because the credit is from an institution outside the United States or when the U.S. institution lacks regional accreditation. This includes institutions such as schools of nursing, music conservatories, or technical institutes which are reviewed by different types of accrediting agencies. It may include courses or programs determined by University of Nebraska-Lincoln to be of a developmental, vocational, or technical nature. For more information see the Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policy.

Note the transfer credit must be evaluated by the UNL department which would offer a similar course, not necessarily the department of your major. For example, regardless of your major, a calculus class must be evaluated by the math department. You may need to contact more than one department for review of your transfer credit (e.g. math, chemistry, psychology, etc.).

Depending on the type of credit there are three separate forms. All forms require Adobe Acrobat® Reader Version 8.0. It may be downloaded free from www.adobe.com. Use the following information to determine the correct form to use for your transfer credit.

Credit from Institutions in the United States -- Use this form when you have

  • transfer credit from an institution which lacks U.S. Regional Accreditation. The credit designator will be NACC on the degree audit; OR
  • transfer credit from an institution which did not directly teach the course (credit was granted for seminar, exam, etc.). You will see the credit designator DVAL on the degree audit; OR
  • other instances where transfer credit from a US institution requires review. The credit designator DVAL appears on the degree audit.

International Transfer Credit -- Use this form when you have college level transfer credit from an institution outside the United States. You may see the credit designation IVAL on your degree audit. Do not use this form if your credit is from a Study Abroad experience. You do not need this form if your courses have current UNL equivalent courses listed on the Transfer Course Equivalency List.

Study Abroad Credit -- Use this form if you are a current UNL student who has participated in an approved Study Abroad program and the credit has been posted on a transcript by an institution outside the United States. If your Study Abroad Credit was pre-approved, you may not need this form. Check with the Study Abroad Adviser (420 University Terrace). If the Study Abroad credit is posted to a transcript from an accredited US institution, (you may see the credit designator GNCR rather than IVAL on a degree audit) see your Academic Adviser for possible substitution into your degree.
