Summer Institute for Promising Scholars (SIPS)

Sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies

DATE: June 9 - July 11, 2008

Academics:

Courses taken during this program are official. They count toward the students fall 2008 GPA and will be recorded on the college transcript, and will receive college credit upon successful completion of these classes. As a part of each course, strategies will be covered to solidify each student's ability to be successful in university level-classes. Courses include:

  • English composition (3 cr.)
  • Mathematics (3 or 5 cr.)
  • A substitute course for students with advanced math standing is available.

Social Activities:

Social and cultural experiences are incorporated into the summer schedule. Students have full access to the Campus Recreation Center plus University and community groups hold forums to acquaint students with the University environment.

Community Service:

SIPS participants are required to participate in a community service activity in Lincoln. This experience offers the scholars meaningful relationships with community members and creates a sense of pride and responsibility.

Employment Experience:

Each scholar will be employed by a University office or department that has committed to provide a meaningful work experience. Students will work 8-10 hours each week.

Scholarship Award:

Each SIPS participant will receive a scholarship covering the 2008 summer tuition, fees, room and board, plus books. Students who enroll full-time the following academic year at UNL, and participate in NU Connections, will receive a $1,000 scholarship ($500 during the student's freshman year and $500 his/her sophomore year). A SIPS participant who completes the program but does not attend UNL in fall 2008 will be required to repay the cost of tuition, and room and board, plus the scholarship will be forfeited.
