SIPS Program Description
Academics:
Courses taken during this program are official. They count toward the students fall 2010 GPA and will be recorded on the student’s college transcript. Students will also receive college credit upon successful completion of these classes. As a part of each course, strategies will be covered to solidify each student's ability to be successful in university level-classes. Students will enroll in one English Composition class (3 credits). Students will also participate in a self-guided math refresher course for one credit hour and Intro to Library Resources (each 1 credit).
Scholars will also complete a capstone project designed to expand their knowledge in an area of interest.
Social Activities:
Social and cultural experiences are incorporated into the summer schedule. Students have full access to the Campus Recreation Center plus University and community groups hold forums to acquaint students with the University environment. Students are required to stay on campus during the duration of the five-week program with the only exception being the fourth of July holiday weekend. Mandatory weekend activities/trips are also incorporated into the schedule.
Community Service:
SIPS participants are required to participate in community service projects throughout Lincoln and the UNL community. These experiences offer the scholar meaningful relationships with community members and creates a sense of pride and responsibility.
Scholarship Award:
Each SIPS participant will receive a scholarship covering the 2010 summer tuition, fees, room and board, plus books. Upon successful completion of the SIPS program, including the capstone project, students who enroll full-time the following academic year at UNL, and participate in NU Connections, will receive a $1,000 scholarship ($500 their first semester and $500 their second semester of their freshman year). A SIPS participant who completes the program but does not attend UNL in fall 2010 will be required to repay the cost of tuition, and room and board, plus the scholarship will be forfeited.
