Directions for Student Request for Departmental Evaluation of Study Abroad Credit

Current UNL students who study abroad may need to have the transfer credit evaluated before it will apply to a UNL degree. If your credit is not a UNL sponsored program and the transfer credit is on a transcript from an institution outside the United States, the credit must be evaluated. If the credit is on a transcript from a regionally accredited college or university within the United States, contact your academic adviser to find out how the credit may be substituted into your degree plan. If you are unsure of your adviser's name, check your WAM! account (My Adviser) or contact the dean's office of your degree college.

Courses must be reviewed by an evaluator in the department which offers a similar course, not necessarily the department of your major. For example, for all students, calculus would be evaluated by the math department. You may need to contact more than one department (e.g. math, Spanish, history) for review of transfer courses. Please have available course documents such as a syllabus, course outline, list of textbooks used, chapters covered, methods of assessment, and grading scale. Evaluators may ask for other specific information, depending on the course.

There is no deadline to complete the evaluation, but the credit will not apply to your degree until the evaluation has been completed and approved.

When you have been notified by International Affairs that your transcript has been received, contact the International Affairs Study Abroad Adviser (420 University Terrace). Obtain a copy of your transcript. The adviser will assist you in determining which evaluator you need to contact to review each of your courses.

Together with the Study Abroad Adviser:

  1. Consult the Department Directory of Transfer Credit Evaluators to determine the appropriate evaluator for each department from which you seek credit. Look for the evaluator for International Credit (I).
  2. Open the Request for Departmental Evaluation Form for Study Abroad Credit.
  3. Complete all Student Information. Note that NU ID is required. List email address.
  4. Complete name, city and country of the transfer institution. If the country is not listed in the drop down box, you may enter it on the "Country" blank.
  5. Save the form to your computer.
  6. For each department for which you need an evaluation contact evaluator and make appointment to meet with him/her, and EITHER:
    • Email the form. From the saved form, click "File" and scroll about halfway down to "Attach to Email..." It will create an email with the file attached. Enter the email address of appropriate evaluator (from the Department Directory of Transfer Credit Evaluators).
    • OR print a copy and take it to the appointment.
  7. Take all course documents and a copy of your transcript to the appointment. Course documents may include syllabus, detailed course outline, description, text, etc.
  8. Discuss the course(s) and obtain the evaluator's signature on the form.
  9. Return completed form to

If you are seeking credit from more than one department (e.g. Spanish and history), follow the above directions for each department. If your credit was pre-approved you may not need to complete the evaluation. Check with the Study Abroad Adviser.
