Directions for Student Request for Departmental Evaluation of Credit from Institutions in the United States

Under certain circumstances credit from institutions in the US needs to be reviewed to determine its applicability to a student's degree program at UNL. This includes transfer courses or programs in which the institution granting the credit is not directly involved, or credit presented for transfer from institutions not accredited by one of the regional accrediting commissions. (www.chea.org)

Your academic adviser may notify you that your transfer courses require evaluation or you may see transfer credit on your degree audit designated NACC or DVAL. Such courses must be reviewed by an evaluator in the department which offers a similar course, not necessarily the department of your major. For example, for all students, calculus would be evaluated by the math department. You may need to contact more than one department (e.g. math, chemistry, psychology) for review of transfer courses. Please have available course documents such as course a syllabus, course outline, list of textbooks used. Evaluators may ask for other specific information, depending upon the course.

There is no deadline to complete the evaluations, but the credit with designations of NACC or DVAL will not be applied to your degree program, even as elective credit, until it has been evaluated and approved by the appropriate department.

Your academic adviser may assist you in determining which evaluators you need to contact to review each of your courses. If you are unsure of your adviser's name, check your WAM! account or contact the dean's office of your degree college. Your academic adviser will have in your advising folder, a copy of your Courses Presented for Evaluation (CHP). Obtain a copy of your CHP or your degree audit.

Together, you and your adviser will

  1. Consult the Departmental Directory of Transfer Credit Evaluators to determine the appropriate evaluator for each department from which you seek credit. Look for the evaluator for Domestic Credit (D).
  2. Open the Request for Departmental Evaluation Form for Institution in the United States.
  3. Complete all Student Information. Note that NU ID is required. List email address.
  4. Complete name, city and state of the transfer institution.

    • OR print a copy and take it to the appointment.
  8. Take all course documents and a copy of your CHP to the appointment. Course documents may include syllabus, detailed course outline including a description, textbooks used, chapters covered, grading scale, and basis for grades such as papers, projects, exam, etc.
