Honors Program Update"20 Years of Excellence" is the Honors Program motto for the year: the Program began in 1986. A celebration is planned for the fall, when we hope to institute an alumni group. Proof of the accuracy of this phrase comes in our graduation rate this May of over 50%. The majority of Chancellor's Scholars and Superior Scholars are also Honors Program students. Our Senior Recognition Reception will take place on April 27. We are also very proud to claim two students who were awarded Goldwaters, Jeanine Frey and James McFarland. Jeanine has worked with Julie Stone in Biochemistry, while James has worked with Jerry Hudgins in Electrical Engineering. Both are also UCARE students. In addition, three of our students have been awarded Fulbrights: Maureen Gallagher, who graduated from the Program in May, 2004, and Andrew Hansen, will be studying and researching in Germany next year, while Lauren Hegarty will be in South America, teaching. Andrew and Lauren were also UCARE students. The Honors Program Selection Committee has completed its review of over 1000 applications from students for the fall of 2006, and hopes to welcome approximately 500 of those in August. In addition, we have created a new opportunity for students to participate in the Program without receiving the textbook scholarship, so we hope to include about 50 more students annually. Over 300 students we accepted in the fall have already put down their deposits with UNL. This class promises to be the most diverse yet, as we have accepted a number of National Hispanic Scholars and National Achievement Scholars. Our current students continue the tradition of excellence by participation in research conferences, by representing us well on Mortar Board, in Innocents and ODK, by studying abroad, and by making their individual as well as collective presences known on campus. Join us to celebrate all of these accomplishments in the fall! |

Mid-Semester Check Fall 2006The third annual Mid-Semester: Checking it Out! event for first year and entering transfer students will be held in the Nebraska Union on the evening of September 18 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and then will be repeated the evenings of September 19-21. The evening's program will highlight and remind students of academic expectations and provide general information on advising resources. This year we are adding a session on financial responsibilities and credit card use. Last year over 1500 students attended the event. The evaluations were very positive. The Colleges with first year orientation courses, the Resident Assistants in the Residence Halls, the Scholarship Chairs of the Greek organizations, the Athletic Department and the OASIS staff were instrumental to the event's success by escorting their first year and new transfer students to one evening's events. We are asking faculty who teach 100 level courses to note this event in their course syllabi. For further information, please contact Pat McBride at 472-4646 or the Office of Undergraduate Studies at 472-1185. |
