E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues

2009-2010 Season: Encountering China
For its 2009-2010 season, the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues takes on the timely and thought-provoking topic: Encountering China.
Home to a fifth of the world's population and a third of the global economy, China is experiencing the most rapid and significant development in memory. Reports about China appear daily in media worldwide, on business pages and beyond. China's rise as a global economic and political power is one of the transformative events of our time and one of the most important challenges facing U.S. foreign and economic policy now and for many years to come. Yet most of us know little about this vast and varied country.
How should the world respond to this emerging great power? How does the United States resolve competing pressures created by China's development? What complex questions must China address in the face of such growth?
