Special Announcement
Greetings from the Learning Communities and Scholar Communities!
Each Learning Community and Scholars Community has had a great semester this fall. The events the communities have participated in have been a nice blend of traditional events the communities are known for such as the Engineering Learning Community "Steak and Egg's" event as well as new community events, such as the Business Learning Community trip to Chicago where they visited two corporations who employed UNL alumni while also taking in the sites of the windy city! Our Scholar Communities have also been active this fall; the EN Thompson International Scholars have been preparing for each forum lecture and continue to enjoy their unique opportunity to interact with the forum speakers. The Pre-Law Scholars have enjoyed engaging in their weekly seminar lead by Associate Dean of the Law College, Glenda Pierce, and graduate assistant, Andrew Faltin. Each community has had several great events this semester, most communities are starting to slow down as the students prepare for finals and plan for the spring!

As we slow down for the semester I would like to recognize the efforts of the peer mentors. Each community is successful because of the positive relationship between the faculty sponsor(s) and the peer mentor. The peer mentor is a former participant of the community who lives with the learning community, helps coordinate study sessions as needed, assist the faculty sponsor(s) in planning community events, and most importantly is a great resource just down the hallway from our first year students! Each year the mentor program seems to get stronger and this year is no exception! So, if you have the pleasure of working with one of the communities' mentors, be sure to tell them what a great job they are doing in assisting our students with their academic and social transition to the university!

Power of Possibilities Update
The "Power of Possibilities" website, created with ITLE-Year 2 funds, has been active on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln website (Admissions, Career Services, General Studies homepages) since January 2007. To date the site has attracted 14,709 visitors. It has become an integral part of the Admissions' office strategy to educate prospective students about the breadth of UNL's majors. For example, the "Power of Possibilities" is featured on the cover of the recent fall magazine that Admissions mailed to 26,164 high school seniors. Counselors in Career Services and advisers across campus frequently use the site when meeting with students who have questions about UNL majors and careers.
The breadth of exposure the site has received nationally (site is referenced on the National Academic Advising Association's website, and it won a bronze award at the Association for Communication Excellence annual Crique & Awards program) and locally (site was highlighted in the Scarlet "Year in Review" edition story on "Campus Projects") is also testimony of its success. Click here for the "Power of Possibilities."
