Special Announcement

Welcome from the Division of General Studies (DGS)!

It's still early in the semester, and DGS is going back to college. Much of our academic advising of undeclared students is necessarily focused on UNL's Comprehensive Education Program (CEP) and its categories and lists of courses. Course descriptions are plentiful enough in the Undergraduate Bulletin and elsewhere, but course descriptions do not always tell the full story. So we have decided to go to the source for more detailed and specific information: we're going back to class.

Every semester, one or more DGS advisers will, with the permission of the relevant department chairs and course instructors, attend (for about three weeks) lectures and recitation/quiz sections of the CEP courses we most often suggest to our students. These class visits are in no way evaluative; they are strictly informational. We want to see firsthand how courses are taught, in terms of both content and delivery, --how the lectures and recitation sessions complement each other, what technical innovations are being used and to what effect. This semester, one adviser will attend sessions of chemistry 109 and philosophy 106. For future semesters we are considering courses in art history, sociology, physics, astronomy and anthropology, --and would be happy to consider others.

CJMC and HLCFPA Join PEARL

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications and the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts have joined PEARL for the 2007-2008 academic year. Orientation sessions for participants from CJMC and HLCFPA will begin at the end of February, 2007.

Program Excellence through Assessment, Research and Learning (PEARL) is a web-based software program that facilitates and support academic programs' efforts to assess student learning outcomes. PEARL also involves an organizational structure that supports faculty discussions about outcomes assessment, encourages sharing of ideas and methods between programs, and provides feedback to academic programs from trained faculty peer reviewers. PEARL began in 2005 with a partnership between the Office of Undergraduate Studies, College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS), the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), and Colorado State University. The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs has provided financial support and the Office of Undergraduate Studies has provided support through the guidance and participation of the University-wide Assessment Coordinator, Dr. Jessica Jonson, in the development and implementation of the organizational structure, tools, and resources needed for implementing PEARL.

Assessment Associate for PEARL

Jeremy Penn has joined the Office of Undergraduate Studies as an assessment associate for PEARL. He will assist the University-wide Assessment Coordinator, Dr. Jessica Jonson, in developing PEARL's potential and capacity for supporting the outcomes assessment process at the program, college and institutional level. Jeremy is a doctoral student in the Qualitative, Quantitative and Psychometric Methods (QQPM) program in CEHS.
