SIPS: Update, Invitation and Newsletter
OUS is excited about this summer's Summer Institute for Promising Scholars (SIPS) summer bridge program. The interim director, Amber Hunter, has added many opportunities for the students to become prepared for courses and college life in the fall. This summer there are 17 students participating in SIPS which is a retention program for incoming freshman who are first generation college bound. During their five-weeks on campus the students are taking a math, English and Library 110 course, have daily forums that consist of Study Skills, Leadership, Campus Orientation and Library. The students will also complete a service learning project, volunteer around Lincoln and complete a Capstone project that they will present to the UNL faculty and administrators during their closing ceremony on Friday, July 10th (see invitation below)

E.N. Thompson Forum

The E.N. Thompson Forum has welcomed a new face this summer. Jingzhuo 'Jessica' Wang, a second-year graduate student from the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, is working with Marcia White to help plan the 2009-10 E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues lecture series.
The theme for the 09-10 series is "Encountering China" and Jessica's background uniquely qualifies her to lend a hand. A native of Inner Mongolia, Jessica earned her Bachelor's Degree from Dong Hua University in Shanghai. After working in public relations for Lucent Technologies in Shanghai for three years, Jessica enrolled in UNL's interdisciplinary Marketing, Communication Studies and Advertising program in the fall of 2007.
This summer, Jessica is working on establishing relationships with Chinese community organizations in Lincoln, conducting market research and completing administrative and organizational tasks. She enjoys the 'real world' experience she is gaining through her work on the Forum, and adds, "I love the way I can look back at my motherland and culture from another perspective."
Kelly Dick Promoted to Program Assessment Coordinator
Kelly Dick will serve as Program Assessment Coordinator in the Office of Undergraduate Studies. This position was previously held by Jeremy Penn who is leaving UNL to become Director of Assessment at Oklahoma State University. Kelly earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and she has a Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University. In 2008-09, Kelly worked with Nancy Mitchell, Director of General Education, in coordinating and facilitating the ACE certification process. Kelly's experience with ACE will be greatly valued as UNL establishes a workable and meaningful process for assessing the ACE program. As Program Assessment Coordinator, Kelly will facilitate the use of the PEARL system and work with faculty and departments in establishing effective assessment processes.
Transfer Students and ACE
First Year Students are learning about UNL's new general education program called ACE --Achievement Centered Education. Transfer Students (those who have taken 12 or more semester hours of college level course work since high school graduation) are learning they have a choice. Until the Fall Semester of 2011, transfer students can elect to follow the bulletin in effect when they enter UNL or the 2008/2009 bulletin, the last bulletin in which the Essential Studies requirements are in effect.
Students who start at a Nebraska community college or one of three community colleges in Iowa can use on-line guides to help determine which courses to take at their institution. Community college students can see which courses apply to Essential Studies requirements in their prospective UNL degree college. Those who have been using Essential Studies requirements to select community college courses can continue under those requirements, as long as they transfer to UNL before August 2011.
Many of the courses students have taken toward Essential Studies requirements will also fulfill ACE requirements. A transfer student who enters UNL in 2009/2010 or 2010/2011 will work with his/her academic adviser to determine which bulletin would be in the student's best interest. In many cases students will enter under the bulletin in effect when they transfer and follow the ACE requirements. Students must abide by all policies and requirements in the selected bulletin.
Any transfer course which is equivalent to a UNL course certified to meet an ACE student learning outcome will fulfill the same outcome. The Course Equivalency List (http://admissions.unl.edu/tequiv/index.php#s) includes the number of the ACE outcome fulfilled by transfer courses.
To ensure that advisers at the community colleges are aware of these changes Cindy Cammack, Associate Director of Admissions, and JoAnn Moseman, Academic Transfer Coordinator, will be traveling to Nebraska community colleges this summer to meet with transfer advisers.
The ACE/Essential Studies decision does not affect students in Criminal Justice or Pre-Social Work programs administered by UNO or the Nursing program, administered by the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Transfer guides will continue to be available for these programs.
All Transfer Guides for Community Colleges can be found at http://ucommxsrv1.unl.edu/dgs/. New guides for use with ACE requirements are being developed and should be available on-line in August.
