Special Announcement

Greetings from the Division of General Studies…

We are pleased to announce that Jennifer Nelson (General Studies Adviser) and Chris Timm (Associate Director of Career Services) are the recipients of an Initiative for Teaching and Learning Excellence (ITLE) grant entitled “The Power of Possibilities”. The funded project includes development of an attractive interactive website that prospective and current students can use to match their self-stated interests with UNL majors. We anticipate that the website will help improve both recruitment of prospective students and retention of current students by helping them become more knowledgeable about all the academic opportunities UNL has to offer.

This year General Studies also has been working closely with Admissions to intensify recruitment efforts. Together our offices created an aggressive marketing campaign that incorporates monthly email messages to prospective students, postcards, letters to high school counselors and a mailer that targets first-generation college students. These efforts, in combination with University Communications’ decision to implement marketing strategies designed to target the undeclared students, have contributed to a significant increase in admissions applications. In January 2006, Admissions Director Alan Cerveny reported that General Studies experienced a 14% increase in applications over last year’s figures. Of course we recognize that recruitment is a never-ending process, and our staff is already hard at work expanding the recruitment plan for next year to include a postcard campaign to high school juniors, updated publications and expansion of efforts to attract more community college transfer students.
