Welcome

Welcome!
The E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues just completed its very successful 20th Anniversary Season with outstanding attendance and campus engagement. We're now looking forward to the 2009-2010 season when we will explore the theme, "Encountering China." Join us as we delve into topics such as trade, technology, China's increasing involvement in Africa, its internal politics and more. The season will kick off on Monday, September 14, 2009 with former Nebraska Congressman Doug Bereuter who now serves as President of the Asia Foundation.
The complete lecture schedule will be announced within the next few weeks. To receive email notification of that schedule and information about ticket availability, sign up for the E.N. Thompson mailing list at http://enthompson.unl.edu. To explore ways your students, department or campus organization can be involved with the Forum and Forum-related activities, contact Forum Coordinator Marcia White at 472-0074 or mwhite2@unl.edu.
The Thompson Forum is a collaborative program of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Cooper Foundation and the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Transfer
As you work with students who may wish to enroll in a summer course or on-line course at another institution, it is a good idea to ensure that it will transfer to UNL and apply to the student's degree. There are several on-line tools available to help. One of the newest is CourseFinder at https://coursefinder.nebraska.edu/. It allows students to find courses at UNO and UNK which have direct equivalents at UNL. Use the tabs to Search by Subject Area, Advanced Search for a keyword, or the Historical Search for equivalencies that are no longer current. Courses with a direct equivalent can be used to retake courses to remove "D" and "F" grades. Grades from NU System campuses are calculated in the University of Nebraska GPA. Students should complete the Intercampus Application to enroll in a course at another University of Nebraska campus. http://admissions.unl.edu/apply/intercampus.php. There is no additional application fee.
Courses from UNK and UNO without a direct equivalent that transfer as subject credit, like history elective, do not appear in CourseFinder. However, they can be found in the Course Equivalency List. http://admissions.unl.edu/tequiv/index.php#s/. This site includes transfer courses from many institutions that have been evaluated and have a current transfer equivalent designation. Courses not on the list have not yet been evaluated.
Credit from an institution in the United States which is regionally accredited will transfer to UNL. Courses that have not been evaluated will transfer as elective credit and may be substituted for a UNL requirement by a student's degree college. Contact your academic adviser.
Courses from institutions without regional accreditation (the regions are Middle States, North Central, Northwest, Southern, Western and New England) must be evaluated to determine whether they may transfer. These institutions often have different missions and goals than UNL and the courses may not be appropriate to apply to a UNL degree. Use the Council for Higher Education Accreditation website (http://www.chea.org/) or contact the Academic Transfer Coordinator for information about particular institutions and their accreditation.

On Saturday, April 25, 2009, members of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honor Society participated in the Big Event the University's day of community service. The Society spent three fun-filled hours singing songs, playing Bingo and engaging in conversation with the senior citizens at the Independence House Coddington. The Independence House is an assisted living memory care center for those affected by Alzheimer's and other dementias. Each student was partnered with a resident and found that they more in common than they imagined. The students will continue to visit the residents during the 2009-2010 academic year as their volunteer project.
ACE Program
Many individuals and groups across campus have worked hard and invested time and effort in order to build the ACE program for UNL's students. We are excited to share ACE with our students at New Student Enrollment and to implement the program this fall. To date 407 ACE-certified courses along with their cross-listed counterparts are available for students. In an effort to help students and faculty understand how courses will help students achieve outcomes, the entire list of course proposals that have been certified can be viewed at ace.unl.edu.
Thanks to all who have dedicated so much toward the successful launch of UNL's new Achievement- Centered Education Program. Your efforts result in a great program and demonstrate that UNL cares about what our students learn.
