Special Announcement
At the heart of reforming UNL's general education program is a commitment to give students the opportunity to learn knowledge and skills they will need for living in the 21st century.
The new Achievement-Centered Education (ACE) will be implemented beginning Fall Semester, 2009. Providing an excellent program while meeting this deadline requires that the efforts of many people must converge. The university community should be commended for the progress that's been made so far. Special recognition goes to the Interim Ace Committee and Course Facilitators who have been essential to the process. Many stakeholders, including UNL advisers, students, faculty, administrators, and staff have offered helpful suggestions for strengthening ACE.
Here are some key accomplishments that have taken place in 2008:
- Faculty in all eight undergraduate colleges voted to approve the ACE program (January 2008)
- Tireless work from faculty and staff who have invested in developing courses for ACE resulted in a total of 454 course proposals being submitted to the Interim Ace (I-ACE) Committee for certification by the October 15 deadline. The I-ACE team meets weekly to discuss the proposals. Their deliberations have been thoughtful and focused on meeting outcomes. The courses that were proposed by the October 15 deadline will be acted upon by I-ACE by early January so that they may be included in New Student Enrollment materials and the 2009-10 Bulletin. (October 2008)
- An ACE team met with chief academic officers in all community colleges, state colleges and most private institutions to discuss ACE and our mutual goals for transfer students. (Summer 2008)
- The Initiative for Teaching and Learning Excellence (ITLE) will distribute $100,000 in grants to stimulate creation of new courses for ACE student learning outcomes 2, 8, 9, and 10. (Fall 2008)
- The ACE web site (ace.unl.edu) continues to be updated weekly with information and guidelines regarding the new program. (On-going)
- ACE is beginning to be recognized across the nation as an exemplar in general education:
"Through its Achievement-Centered Education (ACE) program, UNL has taken an important step to ensuring that its students get the kind of education they need to succeed in today's world. It is gratifying to see how UNL has adapted for its own mission and students the vision of learning presented in AAC&U's Liberal Education and America's Promise initiative. The LEAP initiative is built on the belief that all undergraduate students, regardless of their major, must achieve a set of essential learning outcomes in order to succeed in the workforce and in advanced programs like law, business and the health professions. Having college graduates achieve these outcomes is also important to maintaining our nation's vitality in an interdependent global economy, and increasing our capacity to address current and unknown future challenges."

Carlos Lopez Crowned Homecoming King
On Saturday October 4, 2008 Carlos Lopez was crowned as UNL's Homecoming King. Carlos Lopez is the son of Carlos and Paula Lopez. He is a senior double majoring in psychology and computer science. Carlos is very active on campus. Currently he is a member of NU Connections, the Mexican-American Student Association, University Program Council, and the president of the Student Alumni Association.
"Hi! My name is Carlos Lopez and my family has lived in many places ranging from Omaha, NE, Naples, Italy, Great Falls, MT and then we finally settled in Lincoln, NE. I attended a small High school of 100 students and as soon as I graduated I knew exactly where I wanted to go to school -- the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I'm currently in my third year here studying Psychology and Computer Science, and I'm hoping to pursue a career in law. I lived at home for my first two years and commuted back and forth to campus until recently; then I became a Resident Assistant (RA) in Sandoz Hall. Some of my involvement on campus includes serving on the Judicial Board, Student Court, and last summer had an internship doing New Student Enrollment (NSE) for UNL's Office of Admissions. Go Big Red!"
