Undergraduate major and minor requirements

Major and Minor Requirements for Philosophy
1995 to Present

Majors

Philosophy majors following the 1995-96 or later Undergraduate Bulletin must fulfill four requirements:

  • at least 30 hours of philosophy, with at least 24 hours in courses numbered 200 or above, and at least 12 hours in courses numbered 300 or above
  • at least three of these five courses:
    Philosophy 231 History of philosophy (ancient),
    Philosophy 232 History of philosophy (modern),
    Philosophy 301 Theory of knowledge,
    Philosophy 302 Introduction to metaphysics,
    Philosophy 320 Ethical theory

  • at least one of these two courses:
    Philosophy 110 Introduction to logic and critical thinking,
    Philosophy 211 Introduction to modern logic

  • Philosophy 400 Undergraduate seminar in philosophy

Minors

Philosophy minors following the 1995-96 or later Bulletin must fulfill two requirements:

  • at least 15 hours of philosophy, with at least 12 hours in courses numbered 200 or above, and at least 6 hours in courses numbered 300 or above

  • at least two of these six courses:
    Philosophy 211 Introduction to modern logic,
    Philosophy 231 History of philosophy (ancient),
    Philosophy 232 History of philosophy (modern),
    Philosophy 301 Theory of knowledge,
    Philosophy 302 Introduction to metaphysics,
    Philosophy 320 Ethical theory
