The Department is strongly committed to helping its graduates secure academic jobs at respected institutions. Advisors help students prepare for the Philosophy job market by writing letters of recommendation, scrutinizing and offering advice on dossiers and writing samples, practicing mock interviews, and attending the conventions at which interviews are done. We also try to help students get the kind of professional experience (such as publications and papers at conferences) that maximize the chances of a successful job search. As the following data shows, we have been uncommonly successful at securing employment for our graduates.
The Department has compiled its placement record over the past 31 years (1982-present). During this time, 80 percent (30 of 38) of those who earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Nebraska have found secure or somewhat secure employment in the academy in areas related to their research (or have become university administrators). During this period 40 percent (15 of 38) of our graduates are now tenured; 25 percent (9 of 38) of our graduates during this period currently have a tenure track position; and 15 percent (6 of 38) have continuing lecturer positions with the same university for three or more consecutive years. During this period 20 percent of our Ph.D. graduates currently have no such employment. In some of these cases, the person voluntarily left a tenure track position.
