Major and Minor Requirements for Philosophy
 

Majors

Philosophy majors following an Undergraduate Bulletin from 1995-96 through 2011-12 must fulfill four requirements:

    1. at least 30 hours of philosophy, with at least 24 hours in courses numbered 200 or above, and at least 12 hours in courses numbered 300 or above

    2. PHIL 400 Undergraduate seminar in philosophy

    3. at least one of these two courses:
      PHIL 110 Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking

      PHIL 211 Introduction to Modern Logic

    4. at least three of these five courses:
      PHIL 231 History of Philosophy (Ancient)
      PHIL 232 History of Philosophy (Modern)
      PHIL 301 Theory of Knowledge
      PHIL 302 Introduction to Metaphysics
      PHIL 320 Ethical Theory

Minors

Philosophy minors following an Undergraduate Bulletin from 1995-96 through 2011-12 must must fulfill two requirements:

    1. at least 15 hours of philosophy, with at least 12 hours in courses numbered 200 or above, and at least 6 hours in courses numbered 300 or above

    2. at least two of these six courses:
      PHIL 211 Introduction to Modern Logic
      PHIL 231 History of Philosophy (Ancient)
      PHIL 232 History of Philosophy (Modern)
      PHIL 301 Theory of Knowledge
      PHIL 302 Introduction to Metaphysics
      PHIL 320 Ethical Theory

Starting with the 2012-13 Undergraduate Bulletin, the requirements for the major and the minor will change.

Majors

Philosophy majors following the 2012-13 or later Undergraduate Bulletins must fulfill six requirements:

    1. at least 30 hours of philosophy, with at least 24 hours in courses numbered 200 or above, and at least 12 hours in courses numbered 300 or above

    2. PHIL 400 Undergraduate seminar in philosophy

    3. at least one of these two courses in logic:
      PHIL 110 Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking

      PHIL 211 Introduction to Modern Logic

    4. at least one of these courses in the history of philosophy:
      PHIL 231 History of Philosophy (Ancient)
      PHIL 232 History of Philosophy (Modern)
      PHIL 336 Ethics: Ancient and Medieval
      PHIL 337 Knowledge: Ancient and Medieval

      PHIL 338 Metaphysics: Ancient and Medieval

    5. at least one of these courses in value theory:
      PHIL 320 Ethical Theory
      PHIL 323 Topics in Applied Ethics

      PHIL 325 Advanced Social and Political Philosophy

    6. at least one of these courses in metaphysics and epistemology:
      PHIL 301 Theory of Knowledge
      PHIL 302 Introduction to Metaphysics
      PHIL 305 Introduction to Philosophy of Language
      PHIL 314 Problems in the Philosophy of Mind
      PHIL 317 Philosophy of Science

Minors

Philosophy minors following the 2012-13 or later Undergraduate Bulletins must fulfill two requirements:

    1. at least 15 hours of philosophy, with at least 12 hours in courses numbered 200 or above, and at least 6 hours in courses numbered 300 or above

    2. at least one course each from at least two of the following categories:

      Metaphysics and epistemology
      PHIL 301 Theory of Knowledge
      PHIL 302 Introduction to Metaphysics
      PHIL 305 Introduction to Philosophy of Language
      PHIL 314 Problems in the Philosophy of Mind
      PHIL 317 Philosophy of Science
