Faculty of the Physics & Astronomy Department make headlines year-round for their contributions to science and the public. UNL Today highlighted work from two members of the Department, Timothy Gay and Donald Umstadter, in their roundup of 700+ national news mentions in 2015.

Umstadter was one of the "Discoverers, trailblazers, and prognosticators" of the year for his research on a laser-derived X-ray that could potentially detect nuclear materials hidden behind steel barriers. This research conducted in the Extreme Light Lab was featured by Popular Mechanics.

Our resident football expert, Gay, was quoted numerous times in national media outlets on whether the Ideal Gas Law played a role in the deflated footballs controversy at the National Football League's 2014 AFC Championship Game. He was cited as one of the "Trusted experts and recognized authorities" of 2015.
