Cathy Gabell was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Omaha. She earned her BA at UNL in English, with Minors in Biological Sciences and German, her junior year piloting an exchange program between UNL and the University of Bayreuth, Germany. She returned to Germany on a Fulbright Graduate Teaching Assistantship and to study at the University of Saarland. While abroad she also taught English classes in the business community.
Returning to Lincoln, Cathy earned her MA in German at UNL, teaching as a GTA and taking additional coursework in ESL Methodology, when she began teaching in the UNL IEP (Intensive English Program) summer programs, and later joined PIESL, eventually teaching in all levels and programs. She has also lectured in the UNL Department of Modern Languages, at Union College, and volunteers at Lincoln Literacy and in community schools for German language and culture lessons, from folk dancing to regional food and crafts. Cathy has enjoyed raising her two boys in Lincoln, volunteering with them in their schools and in the community. She enjoys family time on the East Coast, traveling, First Friday Art Walks, running marathons, biking, tennis, and anything outdoors.
