Contemporary Indigeneity: The New Art of the Great Plains

Prospectus

ELIGIBILITY

Open to artists working in any 2D or 3D art or fine craft medium reflecting the theme of the exhibition and the mission of the Great Plains Art Museum. Eligible works will express some element of North American Indigenous culture and have a contemporary or historical significance and placement within the Great Plains of North America. Each individual may submit up to 5 works.

AWARDS, PURCHASES AND SALES

  • Over $5,000 in awards, including the potential to be purchased for the permanent collection of the Great Plains Art Museum.

  • All sales to the public will be conducted through the Great Plains Art Museum with a 100% return to the artist. A suggested donation of 25% of sold works is appreciated. Purchasers must make arrangements with the artist for shipping or hand-retrieval from the museum. The Great Plains Art Museum (GPAM) will not set prices for artwork.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Mailed entries must include an application form and either a CD of jpg works, slide images or other transparencies of works, or printed photograph of works. DO NOT include any original artwork in mailed entries. If you wish to have your CD, transparencies, or photographs returned after jury selection, you must include SASE. E-mailed entries can be sent to Alicia Harris. Submitted works will be blindly reviewed by a panel of Great Plains Art Museum staff, board members, and fellows of the Center for Great Plains Studies and judged on aesthetic and technical merit. Awarding juror Hulleah J. Tsinhnahjinnie will choose works to receive awards after viewing the original works selected for inclusion in the exhibition.

Include both the image size of the artwork and the outside dimensions of the artwork as it will be displayed. The maximum size for 2D work is 1564 square inches including the outside dimension of the frame (for example, 24” x 36” artwork with a five-inch frame). Sculpture must be of moderate size and not exceed 100 pounds.

ACCEPTED ARTWORKS

Each accepted artwork must have an “Identification Label” attached to it. Entrance form should arrive with the artwork(s) at the Museum from April 23-29, 2012 in a sturdy, reusable container. Do not use Styrofoam peanuts of any kind; bubble wrap is recommended. Shipping costs both to and from the Museum will be paid by the artist. The artist is responsible for return shipping instructions and a prepaid label from a shipping company, their arrangements with a specific shipper, or in the case of USPS a check made out to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the amount of the return shipping and a completed return shipping label.

Artists may also hand-deliver and pickup their work in person. Call 402.472.0599 or email to schedule hand-delivery or pick-up.
