GENERAL INFORMATION


All sessions of the symposium will take place in the Nebraska Union on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus, unless otherwise noted. The Nebraska Union is located at 14th & R Streets. The symposium packets will include the final program and event locations.


Registration


Advance Registration is now closed.
On-site registration will be available at the Nebraska Union.


Registration for the symposium may be done either online or by mail. Payment may be made by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or by check (payable to the University of Nebraska). Payment must accompany registration form. All fees are payable in U.S. funds. Please register only one person per form. Registration confirmation will be sent by email.


Advance Full Registration Fee -- $85

Includes admission to all sessions, conference materials, planned breaks and social events including tickets to the Wednesday evening lecture, Thursday and Friday luncheons, Thursday evening lecture, and Friday evening event at Homestead National Monument of America.

Advance Daily Registration Fee -- $60

Includes admission to all sessions, conference materials, planned breaks and tickets for a luncheon and special event for the day.

Advance Student Registration Fee -- $30

Includes admission to all sessions, conference materials, planned breaks and social events including tickets to the Wednesday evening lecture, Thursday and Friday luncheons, Thursday evening lecture, and Friday evening event at Homestead National Monument of America.

Advance Student Daily Registration Fee -- $20

Includes admission to all sessions, conference materials, planned breaks and tickets for a luncheon and special event for the day.

 

On-site Registration will be available after March 21, 2012

**On-site registration does not include tickets to the Thursday or Friday luncheons. We cannot guarantee that on-site registration will include access to the Wednesday or Thursday evening lectures or the Friday evening event.

 

Refunds

All requests for full refund of advance registration fees must be submitted in writing and postmarked by March 16, 2011. Refunds will be processed after the symposium.


Travel and Hotel information

Lincoln is reached via Interstate 80, U.S. Hwy 77, or Interstate 29 by way of Nebraska Hwy 2. The Lincoln Airport is serviced by two major airlines, United and Delta. Other airline carriers service Eppley Field in Omaha (55 miles east of Lincoln). OMALiNK and Eppley Express provide daily shuttle service between the Omaha and Lincoln areas.

Hotel
You are responsible for your own lodging arrangements. A block of lodging rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn Lincoln Downtown, 141 N. 9th Street.

Symposium lodging room rates (not including tax) are: $89 single or double occupancy; $77 government rate (must show a valid government ID) single or double occupancy. The hotel must have your reservation by Wednesday, March 14, 2012, to receive these symposium rates.

Every effort will be made to accommodate the special needs of attendees. For lodging, please contact the Holiday Inn Downtown (402/475-4011); for symposium lectures, please contact the Center (402/472-3082).


Special Events

Tickets for the following events are included free with your advance registration fee; all special events and luncheons require a ticket.

Opening Featured Talk — The Opening Featured Talk of the symposium will be Wednesday evening, March 28 at 7:00 p.m.  Donald Worster, University of Kansas, will give a talk entitled “An Unquenchable Thirst: How the Great Plains Created a Water Abundance and Then Lost It”. The talk, co-sponsored by the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues, will be held at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th Street (across the street from the Great Plains Art Museum).  

Please join us beforehand for a Welcoming Reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q Street.

Thursday Luncheon — The Thursday luncheon will be held in the Nebraska Union Ballroom from 12:00?1:15 p.m. Our speaker will be Martin Jischke, President Emeritus, Purdue University. His presentation is entitled “The Morrill Land Grant Act:  Investing in America’s Future.” Tickets are only available with advance registration.

Thursday Evening Featured Talk — On Thursday evening, March 29, William Thomas, III, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will give the featured talk “Railroads, Art, and the Making of Modern America”.  The talk will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium in the Sheldon Museum of Art, 12th & R Streets, University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

Friday Luncheon —The luncheon will be held in the Nebraska Union Ballroom from 12:00?1:30 p.m. Our speaker will be David Von Drehle, Editor-at-Large, Time Magazine. His presentation is entitled “So Many Important Questions: The 37th Congress and the New America.” Tickets are only available with advance registration.

Special Friday Evening Event — A special evening event will be held at Homestead National Monument of America, Beatrice, Nebraska. Buses will leave from the Center for Great Plains Studies, 1155 Q Street, at 4:00 p.m.  Please indicate on the registration form if you will be taking the bus. An hors d’oeuvres reception will be followed by an informal talk by Elliott West, University of Arkansas, entitled “What Have We Learned?” Buses will leave Beatrice to return to Lincoln around 8:00 p.m.
