RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA–LINCOLN

All REU students will enroll in graduate school preparation mini-courses taught late during the summer and into the first semester. The courses will teach students about the structure of the discipline of psychology, publishing in peer reviewed journals, the structure of professional organizations, research ethics, graduate school admission processes, the GRE exam, letters of recommendation, graduate school applications, financial assistance opportunities, applications for research funding, and many other issues of professional development that undergraduates are unlikely to learn about early in their academic careers. The graduate school preparation courses will help the students to plan advanced education in scientific psychology that best meets their applied and basic psychology interests.

REU students will be full-time students, taking two academic semesters of courses for credit, while in residence at UNL. To ensure fellows receive full credit for their REU coursework, UNL academic counselors will assist the invited students to transfer course credit back to their home institutions. The UNL counselors will ensure that the students have proposed courses approved by the relevant official at the home campus. The transfer plan will be in place before final acceptance of the student into the REU program. To facilitate credit transfer, UNL counselors will provide a list of suggested courses, which will include relevant psychology courses offered in the terms during which the student will be at UNL. The listing will include some upper-level comprehensive education courses. UNL counselors will post summary documents (i.e., descriptions and syllabi) for these courses on a website for easy access to the students and officials at the students' home campuses prior to each REU registration year.
