Department of Psychology

Requirements

Admission Requirements
  • B.A. or B.S. degree with a major in psychology (see below if you are a non-psychology major)
  • Laboratory course in experimental psychology
  • Undergraduate course in statistics
  • Typically a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty or others who can attest to the student's potential
  • Personal statement (see guidelines attached to the department application)
  • Department Application
  • Graduate Studies application (completed online)
  • GRE scores (Verbal, Quantitative, Written), photocopy
  • GRE Subject Test is recommended if not a psychology major

Although there are no minimum cutoff scores, applicants with GPAs lower than 3.5 and GRE subtest scores lower than 550 are not likely to be competitive. The department recruits a diversity of students and approximately 25 percent of the students in recent classes have identified themselves as ethnic minorities.

Students with otherwise superior undergraduate credentials who do not meet admission requirements may be admitted as either provisional or unclassified students while removing deficiencies so as to qualify for full graduate standing.

Law/Psychology joint degree applications require a Law School application as well. The L/SAT is required if applying for a JD.  Instructions for the Law/Psychology program application may be obtained on Law/Psychology webpage. Further questions may be directed to Cortney Page (cpage2@unl.edu)
