Advising

Adviser Information

You will usually be assigned a faculty adviser through your college dean or your major department chairperson. General Studies students will be advised through General Studies, 33 Canfield Administration Building North. If you are an undergraduate, your adviser's name may be obtained at your college dean's office or your college's advising office.

Periods during which advisers have the most demands on their time include the week before the start of Priority Registration, the first two weeks of Priority Registration, the week prior to classes, and the first week of classes. Therefore, you are urged to see your adviser or change your college or major during lower demand periods so that you will have a shorter wait or have easier access to an appointment with an adviser.

The college adviser at Extended Education and Outreach, 900 N 22nd St., is available to advise students who are taking College Independent Study and Summer Reading courses. Contact Extended Education and Outreach, (402) 472-2175, to speak with the adviser.

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Until Arts and Sciences students have decided on a major, they are advised in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center, 107 Oldfather Hall. To “declare” a major, visit the Advising Center. Students who have declared a major are assigned an adviser by the appropriate chief adviser in their major department. You should consult your adviser about all academic matters, including the selection of courses for which to register. If you have questions about a particular major or minor field of study, contact the chief adviser. A complete list of chief advisers is available in the Advising Center.

Adviser Change

To change or correct the listing for your college adviser, go to your college dean's office or your college's advising center and complete a "College-Degree-Major-Adviser Change Form" (CDMA) .

Degree Audits

A degree audit (an analysis of degree requirements you have met) is performed by Graduation Services, 109 Canfield Administration Building South, after a student has completed 90 credit hours toward their degree (see exceptions noted below). Generally, students qualifying for a degree audit include undergraduate students who have matriculated, are within two or three semesters of graduation, or have earned a specific number of semester hours toward a degree. If you are within two semesters of completing your degree program but have not yet received a degree audit, you can request one at Graduation Services, 109 Canfield Administration Building South.

Students can run their own degree audits through the WAM! system (wam.unl.edu) by choosing the “My Degree Audit” option through the main menu. Students are strongly urged to check their degree audits on WAM! at least once each year. If you have changed your plans regarding your major, be sure to formally change your degree program with your college so that the WAM! degree audit will properly reflect your current degree progress.
