UNL technology, food featured at state fair

See the 4-H Fashion Show on Husker Vision, learn how spiders communicate up close and personal on video or sample Nebraska-made foods from around the state.

These are just a few of the things 4-H and UNL are offering at the 2008 Nebraska State Fair, running through Sept. 1.

The Nebraska State Fair is offering several new 4-H activities that all Nebraskans can learn from, said Tracy Pracheil, assistant extension educator in 4-H youth development at UNL.

"This year we are capitalizing on successful events we've had in the past and are enhancing them with a twist," Pracheil said. "The events highlight different and new things going on in the 4-H program."

In addition to viewing 4-H projects from youth around the state, participants can enjoy the Discover 4-H Event in the 4-H Exhibit Hall. This year, animal science topics will be featured Aug. 28 from 10-noon and the Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) Program will be featured on Aug. 30 from 10 a.m.-noon. Other exploration stations will be hosted throughout the week.

The Lil' Green Screen also will be present in the 4-H Exhibit Hall and will feature live feeds from across the Nebraska State Fair.

"We are sending 4-H'ers out around the fair to obtain live footage," Pracheil said. Footage will be broadcast on the 8 foot by 11 foot screen and allow people in the 4-H Exhibit Hall to see what else is going on around the fair, she said.

Also open daily is the 4-H Cyber Fair, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the air-conditioned Farmland Building. A highlight at the 2008 Cyber Fair will be the video spider exhibit. Participants will be able to see how spiders communicate using body language.

The Cyber Fair also is hosting the inaugural Youth Entrepreneurship Discovery Challenge.

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will have displays available at the Cyber Fair, in Agriculture Hall, the 4-H Exhibit Hall and the swine, sheep and goat barns Aug. 22-Sept. 1. It also will be premiering a 3-D recruitment video at the Cyber Fair. CASNR will be handing out candy bars to 4-H and FFA participants and parents during check-in and will be giving barn tours on both weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

CASNR will again be sponsoring the Amazing CASNR Race, a scavenger hunt for UNL students, at 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at State Fair Park. For more information, contact Jill Brown at 472-8273.

State fair visitors will have the opportunity to sample food products produced in Nebraska. This event is part of UNL's Food Processing Center display and will be located in the Lancaster Building.

"Each year we invite Nebraska food companies to display their products and provide free samples," said Jill Gifford, manager of the center's Food Entrepreneur Program. "Visitors can taste many Nebraska products including popcorn, sauces, cheeses, jellies, honey, pickles, lemonade, corn snacks and beef sticks."

The Food Processing Center provides business, marketing and technical assistance to Nebraska's food industry.
