W-2 Distribution Week of Jan. 24

W-2 Forms will be distributed to the departments during the week of Jan. 24. Employees should note that the amount shown as gross year-to-date earnings on their last check stub/payroll deposit advice and the amount shown as taxable income on their check stub/payroll deposit advice and W-2 Forms may be different because:

o Tax shelter retirement deductions reduced taxable gross pay for 1999 (annuities will will be taxed upon receipt during retirement).

o Employee deductions for reimbursement accounts, long term disability, accidental death and dismemberment, health/dental insurance and life insurance (except dependent life), have been withheld as "pre-tax" deductions; therefore, employees do not pay income tax on these premiums. If there is an amount in Box 13, there will be a code (letter) next to it. The codes are as follows:

o C-Imputed income for life insurance over $50,000 (for employees at IANR only)

o E-Section 403 (b) employee retirement deduction(s) for SRA(s) and Additional retirement.

Student Observatory to Open for Jan. 20 Lunar Eclipse

Weather permitting, the Student Observatory will be open Thursday evening Jan. 20 from 8 to midnight to permit telescopic views of the one of the best lunar eclipses in several years.

The Student Observatory is located on the roof of the Parking Garage. The observatory will not be open if the sky is totally cloudy.

A lunar eclipse occurs when a full moon goes into the shadow of the earth. Because the moon's orbit is tilted with respect to the earth's axis, this does not happen very often. The Jan. 20 eclipse is particularly well placed for Nebraskans. The moon will enter the darkest part of the earth's shadow at 9:01 p.m. CST. A gradual darkening of part of the moon will have been noticeable during the previous hour. From 9 until 10 more of the moon will going into the earth's shadow until at 10:04 the moon is totally immersed in the shadow. The total phase of the eclipse will last from 10:04 until 11:22 p.m. The moon will leave the darkest part of the earth's shadow at 25 minutes past midnight and will be back to it full brightness by 1:24 a.m.

Children are welcome at all public viewings at the Student Observatory. Please note that the observatory is unheated.

The next public viewing is scheduled for Feb. 11 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Susan Miller, assistant professor of ethnic studies, will present the seminar. A reception will begin at 3 p.m.

In 1849, an indigenous community from the Seminole nation (the present Seminole Nation of Oklahoma) left the area claimed by the Untied States and signed an agreement with the Republic of Mexico. Living south of the Rio Grande in the sate of Coahuila, they provided militia service in defense of the Mexican-U.S. boundary against incursions by Americans and Plains Indians. During their 10-year residence in Mexico, the Seminoles adopted cultural patterns usually associated with the Plains Tribes. This talk will discuss the present Seminoles' traditional memories of that Mexican episode.

Teamwork Made I-2 Class Success

An Internet2 experiment linking three universities with live interactive instruction is deemed a success.

A plant science class was taught using the system during the fall semester, and based on that success, at least one class will utilize Internet2 this spring. Others have expressed interest.

A story in the Dec. 16 Scarlet failed to mention the behind-the-scenes staff that worked to make the experiment possible.

Engineers from closed circuit television at Nebraska Educational Television provided the video equipment and made the connection to the computer systems. Information Services provided computer equipment and made the Internet2 tie-in.

"We were delighted to be involved because this is cutting edge technology as far as the Internet is concerned," said Rusty Warner, a closed circuit television supervisor at NET. "It was nice to be in on the ground floor. Hopefully this is something we can exploit to the fullest and continue to use."

NET's Ken Johnson brought Warner and television engineer Larry Gatliff to the project. The Information Services team was led by Bruce Sandhorst with Aaron Hosier integrating the system and Kent Eitzmann and Michael Davison putting in extra hours to iron out networking details.
