Memorial Service March 4 for Larry Doerr

A memorial service for the Rev. Lawrence (Larry) Doerr will begin at 10 a.m. March 4 at First-Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 D St.

Doerr, retired campus minister at the United Ministries in Higher Education, died Feb. 24. He was 68.

Father Don Hanway, minister at St. Mark's on the Campus Episcopal Church, said Doerr died of complications of leukemia.

"I feel a great sense of loss," Hanway said of his long-time colleague and friend. "Larry was a tremendous presence at the university and in the community and many of us had come to rely on him for his commitment to ideals we cherish plus his taking on the responsibility for a number of events."

Doerr was among the principal organizers of the Sue Tidball Award for Creative Humanity and several on-going luncheon speaking series on campus. He also was involved in peace-maker and other humanitarian activities.

"Larry was a person who was pretty outspoken in terms of championing many causes that needed to be addressed," Hanway said.

"The campus is a little more lonely without him," he said.

Doerr is survived by his wife, three children and two grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Rev. Lawrence Doerr Memorial (Scholarship) Fund in care of the family.
